Apple has begun counting down to its 50 billionth App Store download, just four months after announcing the App Store had passed 40 billion downloads.

The company is offering a US$10,000 App Store gift card to the lucky individual who downloads the 50 billionth app, and one of the first 50 app downloaders after the milestone will receive a US$500 App Store gift card.

Apple’s last App Store countdown in March last year, saw Chunli Fu in China receive the US$10,000 gift card, after downloading the 25 billionth app from the App Store.

After launching in 2008, the App Store is growing exponentially with the App Store reaching 40 billion app downloads in January – almost half of which came in 2012.

At its current rate, the 50 billionth app should be downloaded around midday tomorrow.
