Adobe has released Photoshop Touch for Phone, a companion app to its iPad and Android tablet programs of the same name. The new offering for smartphones makes the app even more accessible for people whose best camera is the one they have in their pocket. With an estimated 1 billion smartphones in use worldwide plus improvements in camera quality, network access, and social networking, an advanced phone-based photo editing app is a compelling space for Adobe.

The phone-based photo editing app shares an almost identical set of features with the tablet version, but modified for optimisation on the phone. The app features core Photoshop tools like layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters. You can use traditional tools like the Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, or Curves to fine tune photos. It features the Scribble selection tool for precise selections, and supports high resolution images of up to 12 megapixels in three layers, or up to 16 layers in smaller images. Special effects tools such as Color Drops and Lens Flare are also included.

The app’s Camera Fill features let you blend layers, selections, and blend modes in real time using the smartphone’s camera. Not only can you share to the popular social networking sites but you can also share images between other compatible apps. It has an updated help system and the ability to start a project from the clipboard.

At the top of the screen there’s a selection menu, adjustments, styles, plus additional effects, and an Undo button. At the bottom, there’s the layers panel that you can hide or reveal and the tools menu.

Photoshop Touch for Phone is, not surprisingly, deeply connected to the company’s Creative Cloud subscription service, though phone-based users do not have to be paying customers of the cloud service in order to use its features. People who purchase the $5.49 app will automatically get 2GB of storage space so they can take advantage of the app’s phone-to-tablet-to-computer syncing features. But you can use the app with or without cloud syncing.

Photoshop Touch for iPhone requires an iPhone 4S or later or 5th generation iPod touch. On Android, it requires a phone running version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. The app is available in English, French, German, and Japanese from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
