Apple will launch its newest iPad, the 7in iPad mini, in the third quarter of 2012 at less than US$499 according to reports.

The New York Times believes Apple will announce a 7.85in tablet in spring, planning to “lure customers who want different sizes of tablets into the iPad product family”.

“The company is developing a new tablet with a 7.85-inch screen that is likely to sell for significantly less than the latest $499 iPad, with its 9.7-inch display, according to several people with knowledge of the project who declined to be named discussing confidential plans,” the newspaper said.

The report comes as Google began shipping its 7in Nexus 7 tablet over the weekend, running the newly announced version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Rumours of a smaller iPad reached fever-pitch last week, with photographs of ‘engineering samples’ released to the public, reports that iPad mini manufacturers have been told to prepare for mass production and numerous reports claiming an October or September announcement date.
