Tip: Rearrange Finder columns

I’d like the Size column to appear before Date Modified in all Finder windows displayed in List view. Years ago I could modify the com.apple.finder.plist file to do this, but that file has changed and is no longer an option. Is there a workaround?

In Mountain Lion open a new Finder window with the root directory contents. Press command-J to open the View window.

In the Finder window, drag the Size column to the left so it’s before Date Modified. In the View window, click Use as Defaults and close the View window.

Most of the folders on your hard drive should display the Size column first, though the Downloads folder will maintain its original order. If you shift its Size column to the left, it should always open in that view.

In earlier Mac OS versions, this technique doesn’t work reliably. However, you can move columns manually in the windows that you routinely use and they should stick.
