If you have a Gmail or other Google email account set up in Mail on your iPhone, you may have noticed the iOS 4 update a few months ago replaced the swipe to delete function with swipe to ‘Archive’. And if you updated an iPad to iOS 4.2 today, you’ll have noticed the same problem.

In iOS 4+, Apple changed the default function for these accounts. But that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever.

A few Twitterers have lamented the missing delete option, so we thought we’d make it clear that it’s easy to get back:

Open up the Settings app on your iOS device, and choose ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’. Select the problematic Google account, and toggle the ‘Archive Messages’ switch to OFF.

Now when you swipe across an unwanted email, you’ll see the Delete button you know and love. Cheap Viagra offers and Nigerian lotteries are again just a swipe away from being vanquished forever.
