News, Reviews and more from Australia's Macintosh Authority
Apple's minimalist approach has kept the number of different models relatively low, but it's still important to know which MacBook you have when trying to figure out things like how much RAM it can hold. Some web sites might claim the limit is 2GB, others 4GB, depending on your specific model; here's how to know for sure.

In an earlier piece I wrote about Mac OS X's Unix foundations which talked more about how that Unix underbelly is obfuscated rather than what made that foundation worthwhile. This time, we're going to expose the underbelly a little bit more to understand why Apple chose Unix as the foundation to Mac OS X.

In my review of Numbers ’09, I included a tip about entering formulas using the keyboard. In the event that not all of you choose to read the Numbers review from top to bottom, here’s the tip, along with additional details on exactly how to use it.

What if you want to send text messages to more than one recipient at once using your iPhone? Picking each recipient individually works, but if you have a dozen or more people to send to, this can get fast quickly.

In iPhoto ’08, there are two entries in the Library section of the sidebar—Events, which splits your library according to the events you’ve created (or that were auto-created), and Photos, which simply shows all the photos in your library. When viewing the Photos area of the library, you can optionally show the event titles from the Events section of the library; just select View -> Event Titles, or press Shift-Command-F.
Rob Griffiths | Jan 27, 2009Are you annoyed by bouncing icons in the Dock—and I’m not talking about the bounce when you open an application, but when a program wants to get your attention. Like when iChat has a video chat request, or System Preferences wants your OK to install a new panel, or Software Update found an update to install. The main problem I have with the bouncing icons is that they’re never-ending; once they start, they won’t stop until you switch to the application to end the bounce.

As I type these words, I am waiting for Apple's Developer Connection web site to ease up sufficiently for me to download the long-awaited Software Developer Kit for the iPhone (and iPod touch, just by the by). In a way, I hate developer-oriented announcements — "here's a really cool thing we're working on, and it's available now, and hoi polloi can have it in about six months". Actually, it's the six months I hate.
