Synology releases updated NAS units and services Gadget Guide

Synology recently announced a range of new products and software applications for both businesses and individual consumers at its annual event, Synology 2018. During the event, Synology demonstrated its devotion to bring advanced technologies to every business and individual. These include Drive, a centralised file portal for NAS users to create an even more streamlined cloud experience; Active Backup for Business, a versatile on-premises business backup solution for servers; Moments, a personalised AI-driven photo album, and other enhancements on the DSM to provide more stable services.

“This year at Synology 2018, a lot of exciting and innovative solutions and products were announced to accelerate businesses and secure digital assets,” saysDerren Lu, CTO of Synology. “We were happy to see so many of our users at the event to witness the amazing things Synology brings to organisations and personal life.”

Synology launched two particularly exciting products for businesses – Active Backup and Virtual Machine Manager. Active Backup for Business supports VMware virtual machines backup and the system image backup for Windows/Linux servers and PCs, with highlights including differential backup, granular recovery and global deduplication. System image backups can also be converted to Windows/Linux virtual machines and brought live through Synology Virtual Machine Manager, which features support for high availability, storage migration and replication to maximise service uptime.

For the individual consumer, Synology hasn’t forgotten about you. The brand announced what is called Moments – a smarter way for home multimedia management. Moments is a new photo app, powered by deep-learning technology, that allows life moments to be displayed in automatic smart albums. These smart albums can be sorted through facial recognition, location information and pre-defined objects and scenes in the photos, allowing for a more intuitive browsing experience.
