The Livescribe 3 smartpen, once paired with a smartphone or tablet, captures everything you write or draw. Featuring a Swiss-made tungsten-carbide ballpoint ink cartridge, the Livescribe 3 smartpen integrates an infrared camera, ARM processor, Bluetooth Smart chipset, flash memory and 14-hour lithium ion battery to transcribe the pen’s movement to a mobile device. Using the Livescribe+ mobile app, your notes can be organised, tagged, searched for and converted to text.

  1. MBP man says:

Have had the Livescribe 3 for 2 months. Also was a heavy user of the earlier Livescribe Echo and Sky. The New Livescribe 3 and has better form factor and looks overall. While the previous models the audio was recorded by the pen and was always available in the pen to listen to later, the audio for the 3 is recorded by an iOS device with linked app. The heavy lifting beiung done by the iOS device means the pen got it’s slimmer form factor. It also means to go back to listen to the audio you recorded in – say – a meeting, lecture or product presentation you obviously do that on the app on iOS device which is also where you see your handwritten notes (can be exported by email, Evernote etc.) so that’s handy.

Only downside of this is that recording to audio to the pen in the old model was failsafe and I foiund 100% reliable to recover. Never lost audo linked to notes over 2-3 years. With the iOS link for audio, the audio will only start recording if the pen is linked to the Livescribe app and the app is open on the screen when you start recording. If the iOS device goes to sleep or you switch to another app I have found regularly the recording function dropped out and I’d find at the end of the session all the audio had been lost and unrecoerable. That can be disasterous if you were relying on that audio and the old Livescribe Sky and Echo pens, never once had the problem.

    MBP man:
I read that if you have the latest version of the livescribe app, you ios device will record when it is asleep

    “What’s New in Version 1.0.6 (1/1/2014)
    - Fixed crashes encountered during some Pencast recordings
can you confirm which version of the app is installed when you wrote this message”

    version 1.0.3 (as of November 29, 2013)
“Regarding auto-lock, when your iPad or iPhone screen auto-locks while recording a pencast, the recording will continue (the LED light on the smartpen remains red) and you’ll just need to unlock your phone to end the recording. Once started, recordings will continue even if the Livescribe+ app is running in the background and/or if the screen is turned off.”

LIVESCRIBE+ APP 1.0.2 Has corrected issues with recording Pencasts
“I have made many Pencasts successfully. Auto-Lock and Pass-Code no longer need to be disabled”

  3. Garry says:

These issues have been corrected in later software updates of the ios device app

can you confirm what version you had at the time you made this comment

should be solved with 1.0.2 and 1.0.3
