otherwise try clicking the "manually manage music" box in iTunes when you plug your phone into iTunes that usually works.

Thanks for your reply.
Just to clarify, the screen grab below is what I see when I select Manage music manually, if I proceed, with this, does it:
A) totally erase the phone and require a restore from my backup
B ) only change the iTunes account that the phone is associated with and delete any content that is not part of the new account that I want to sync with?
