With optical drives rumoured to be omitted from the next line of MacbookPros, and the recent death of my MacBookPro, I am wondering if anyone uses a third party optical drive with their Mac. I know Apple makes one, but I am reluctant to buy it as I have not had much luck with their internal drives (way too sensitive), and I am sick to death of not being able to work around the region code limitations. Any thoughts and advice appreciated. I have a lot of data stored on cd/DVD so until I migrate that to the "next big thing" I will be needing an optical drive.

My son has had the apple one for years now, and it's never missed a beat, which is not bad considering it costs less than 90 bucks.

Hmm. I won't be much help here as I don't understand why anyone would even need an optical drive these days.

I bought an Apple external drive for my MacBook Air, little flat thing for $138, so I could copy pics and stuff to a CD for others when overseas. However the cable broke at the drive end through flexing while in my bag. Not happy. Still works if I straighten out the cable so the wires touch, but not reliable.

How do you rip CD's and DVD's without one?

Cheers,

My next Mac will probably be a MBA and I'll need an optical drive, so I'm keen to hear what people think.
You might not know it to look at me, but I'm pretty radical.
