How Small Can You Go

I am no sim card guru, but do you really have to have sim card in phone's ? why can't you just build the sim card thingo onto the circuit board, and when you sign up to which ever telco in the world you want,
just get a password or something, thats activates the phone, sort of like you do know with iTunes.
Or am i over simplifying the process ?

Multiple sim cards are quite common for those who travel a lot.
I currently have four sim cards, one for Aus, one for France which gives reasonable roaming rates in EU and data, one for calling Aus from the EU (1c per minute) and one for when I can't find any of the others! (It's a travel sim that works anywhere.)
The phone loves it when we are in one place for six months, because I don't have to open it's little trapdoor!
Sadly, the situation you propose would end in even more control for the telcos. (is an unlocked iPhone even available in the US?)
(One more week and the Aussie Sim gets slipped away into it's sleeve again until October!)
