With the Retina screen on the new iPad, there have been concerns that to adapt with the high resolution app developers will have to create larger files to accommodate the growing number of device screen sizes.

Lex Friedman has written a blog, available on the Macworld Australia website, tackling the upcoming issue.

Will people be forced to cull apps? Move up in the iPad range to the 32GB and 64GB models?

Does anyone think this will affect their current iOS device?

I would love to know your thoughts.

People will adjust to making there IOS device more leaner i would think, or at least pay a little more attention to managing their device. We just purchased our first iPad a couple of weeks ago, thankfully we considered space at the time 32gig will do for what we tend to use that "particular device for", with a little bit of room for Jane to do her thing with of a night, but can see her having one for herself a bit later on, and no doubt, will be a choice of the maxim possible storage that Apple offers at the time.

As for myself i purchased/ordered the new 64gig for that very reason more "space" O and also the sudden reality slap that i should have got one two years ago but i will leave that one for another day.

Anyway still early days thou, its going to be inevitable that as the evolution of apps will take up more real-estate and the need for space you will need to run on these devices, O and the need for faster processors to boot, so to speak.

If they build it, they will come, they will adjust, as they always do.

As storage gets bigger we use more of it. That's a fact of life. But, thanks to the cloud, devices are no longer the discrete storage entities they once were.

iCloud as a solution isn't really feasible right now. File sizes are large, people can't just download Apps, Music etc via iCloud where ever they are without chewing up their data allowance, and besides there is a maximum 50MB limit on 3G.

I think people will be forced to upgrade to greater storage capacities and move to the 64GB for example. It's interesting Apple didn't release a higher capacity version with the New iPad, but I guess they are going to do that with the next iPad and entice everyone to upgrade once again.

Edit: Just realised they didn't release a higher capacity iPad as they can't drive the price of flash memory down enough to keep the iPad at the current price point.

On my first iPad I ordered 64gb because I didn't have a clue what I needed. By the time my ipad2 came along I ordered the 64 again, and now this time I have once again gone with 64gb wifi plus 3G. Why? Getting the highest config possible makes the resale better (I got $640 on eBay for my original), plus I like to take movies with me when traveling and 64 gives me heaps of room.

I agree also with an earlier post about culling apps. After going through the stage of having as many as possible, and having had an iPad since day one of the first model, I now know what I need to have and what I don't. Yes, I have a gazillion apps in my iTunes folder, but like my iMac, I have found over time that less is more and I think I now have a better mix, given that I do certain things on my iPad and other things on my iPhone rather than doubling up on both devices. For example, I don't do movies on the iPhone and don't do music on the iPad. And to date I have found iCloud and itunes match well worth the price of admission.

So to summarize, get the biggest size you can afford, be objective about what you must have on the device, and definitely take advantage of iCloud.

Both the iPads I've used have been bought by work, and were both 16GB and really too small. I've had to cull and reinstall apps on a regular basis, which has been a bit of a pain but nothing I couldn't live with.

That said, I've really noticed the size of apps creeping up recently, and would really recommend you buy bigger than 16GB. But if it's a question of price, then 16GB is better than nothing (or a non-iPad tablet!)

Cheers
Dave

I've never filled my 32Gb, but we'll see. Like Golfer, I manage my apps and don't keep too much cruft on there. But can always have what I want.
