so excited about iPhoto for iOS but it doesn't work on original iPad because for some reason you need a front facing camera!

Can't see why not. The biggest upgrade to the guts of the iPad seems to be graphics, and that will only be to drive the retina display.

Should be fine with iPad 2. And will work on iPhone too.
