My MBP is terrific, but I run Aperture for most of the time I"m using it, and I'm never sitting in a nice air conditioned office so the temperature at which it runs comes close to "too hot to handle".

I usually use a breadboard like device of my own concoction when using it on my lap, which I do often as I live an almost entirely peripatetic existence. My local Apple Genius has informed me that by using it on my lap, I have no claim under Applecare to replace the feet which have fallen off "due to overheating".

So what am I to do to protect my nice new (and expensive) replacement feet? I wonder about a cheap fan powered base, but surely that's going to chew battery life - is there any other solution that's not going to weigh a lot, and preferably not cost a lot?

Or should I just carry a card table with me on all of my journeys?

You used to be able to buy a bean bag style laptop stable table, for about 20 bucks in Kmart which was great, for keeping your laptop, from burning your knees. I haven't seen one for a while, but to be honest I haven't looked for one for a couple of years now either, but I am sure they would still be available with the popularity of laptops these days.

I can't see how, being a bean bag style of gadget, it will let the air pass around the base of the unit and keep it cool

I have checked out a few ventilated stands and read a couple of reviews, and I'm not convinced that there is any difference between the ones that run fans and the ones that don't.

I have used a chopping board for this machine, but previously had made a hollow version with sheets of 4mm ply top and bottom. I would like some feedback on whether ventilated pads really work or not though.

Most reviews I have read, say the fans are an overpriced gimmick, and usually only last a couple of weeks before they pack up.

Hehe, the ones I've been looking at haven't been overpriced! Try six dollars including postage! But you are right about the reviews.

Maybe I'll build my own heat sink!

Maybe I'll just wait for Apple not to answer my letter..... sigh!

Yep, it's not a laptop. Using it as such will cause it to overheat and melt the glue on the feet!

I am not alone in this predicament, the web is littered with others who have obviously put up with third degree burns to their privates and melted off the feet! Apple's attitude is also well documented!

I don't usually suffer too much angst about this sort of stuff, but the new Consumer Laws do require a product to be fit for purpose, and if my "portable computer" isn't going to hold up under gentle use, then I may have one more letter to write!

Perhaps keep the bean bag in the freezer..When your not using it of course.
