Gday,

Im trying to get some DVD's that I have converted to a format which I can transfer to my iPad. So far I have tried Handbrake which I expected to do it no worries but it only seems to convert the first chapter and doesnt give any options to select individual chapters. I also tried a DVD ripping program (MDRP from memory) but it just copied the disc to my mac.

Can anyone recommend some software that will easily convert those DVDs to .mp4

Handbrake does it fine for me, check your settings.

Yep, handbrake is the go here, I use it in favor of imtoo DVD burner / ripper thingo. Check for updates on Handbrake, re-load the thing if it's not working but

Mmmm I use both programs and works fine.

I wish I had an iPad to watch them on, anyway just a question thou, why are you trying to record individual chapters with movies or do you mean titles?

I think the latest version of Handbrake is 0.9.5. What version are you running?

HandBrake 0.9.5 x86_64 is currently the newest version available. This is what my check reveled....

Latest version of handbrake in use, and just using standard settings with the iPad preset in place. It works fine for converting the first chapter but I can't find anything that will tell handbrake to convert the entire DVD.
I dunno what else to try, the advanced settings are pure greek to me. Any clues?

Step us through what your doing, even a screen grab would do

Are you trying to do TV shows or a movie?

It may be a problem when you set the source.

Under the 'Source' heading in the main window 'Chapters' is an option from one of the drop down menus. It is possible to set Handbrake to rip set chapters, and maybe get stuck on only the first one.

here's a screen shot of the set up, showing the preset, the version of handbrake, and that its set to rip all the chapters. If its user error, then I'll be buggered if I know what it is

Ive just tried it again and the same thing happened. It looked as if it was going to do the full encode, said it was going to take 2 and a bit hours but then as soon as I took my eye off it it decided to stop working and just produce the first chapter.

so should i try a fresh download of handbrake or a reinstall or some other arcane trick? I cant see any reason why it wont work

That is a dilly of a pickle. Have you tried any presets other than "iPad"?

Actually, do you have VLC installed?
The reason I ask is that a few versions ago, Handbrake stopped including the part of the program that enabled it to bypass anti-copying techniques on DVDs. Handbrake uses the file that still comes with VLC to do this.

Dylan, I had VLC automatically download on my machine some time ago, from memory handbrake needed the latest version of VLC to run. The icon is in the shape of a road cone with strips, I don't really understand how it all works apart from the basics, but thought that this might help....
I will have a closer look soon, just a bit busy at present.....

I'm starting to think its an issue with that particular DVD cos I'm trying a different one and it seems to be working fine with handbrake now. I wonder what's on the other disc that is stopping it from being converted. I've tried ripping it with Mac the ripper to see if there is any copy protection but that didn't seem to make any difference. something is not allowing the conversion to go any further than the first chapter.

It's not as though I'm trying to do anything dodgy. I own the DVD and just want to be able to watch it on my iPad.

mate, I've tried everything i can think of. The original disc, a disc image of the disc, the MTR version of the disc. I can only presume that it has some heavy duty copy protection built in that needs some trick software to get around and I dont know what that may be. Its nothing to do with Handbrake, or my settings, its nothing to do with VLC or MTR, its just something in that particular DVD

Looks like it's not going to work, try buying the imToo ripper ultimate 6, that should work, its relatively expensive but you get what you pay for in this life....
