New little about it, but thought heck, for $129 why not?

Lovely device, typically fkor Apple, well built, quality product.
Setup was easy, getting it to show photos, videos from my MacBook, YouTube and rented movies was all easy.
This is a great way top share stuff I have okn the computer with others in front of a big screen.

Only one disappointment, the range of movies on offer. As far as I have seen, all american stuff, no Australian or British content. I hope that will change soon.

I too just love this device, have it running through the home surround system, just fire up the iPad, iPod,iPhone anytime you want to hear some sounds, also you can stream movies direct from your iTunes library, there is more things that this baby can do, we had the end of yacht regatta party at our new home, I had the slides (300 odd pictures) & music running trough ATV, most impressive, the Punters were not only getting full, they were getting an eyeful as well, :)....Mick

Hello Greumach

I have been toying with the idea of installing Apple TV but have been a bit wary of its performance, considering our Internet connection can be dodgy. How do you find it?

The attraction for me is to run the many ancient video clips on YouTube.

Some of the classic I have discovered:

Your comments would be appreciated.

Hi Barrie, just loved the Dali clip, thanks, what you need to find out is what speeds you are getting. Google Internet speed test, I would post up a link but I am on the road at present. Check the forum, ie: do a searches there was a thread on what speeds people were getting. Once you have that info post it up and we can let you know if you will be able to stream to ATV with the current set up

Hi Barrie

My speed test normally shows about 5.5Mbps down and 0.31Mbps up (which I wouldn't count as fast at all)

I don't rent movies as I stream everything from my NAS but I do stream a lot from YouTube and Vimeo on the ATV and with the speeds I have stated I have never had any problems. (for example me and the wife watched 'fail' videos on YouTube for a hilarious hour the other day without a dropped connection, slow down or any other badness) Hope that helps.

My broadband is with Internode, but thinking of switching to TELSTRA, either way, my speed is fine for YouTube, I downloaded my first rental last night, it worked fine but $7 is a bit dear and the film was rubbish.
I'll stick to YouTube from now on :)

Hi,
I have 2 apple tv's and no problems a all. I run it from a wireless G router (not N yet) with no problems whatsoever. Have over 400 movies in itunes and subscribe to various podcasts with no problem. Also run eye tv which auto transfers recordings to itunes so can watch on apple tv.

Without being able to check my speeds here, I tend to agree with Headman, from my memory, which I didn't want to rely on to heavily, anything below 5.0 Mbps I couldn't stream without the "slowdown or any other badness". Still it will be interesting to see your speed test results.....Mick....:)

No, it doesn't have to be that fast. We rarely get over 3Mbps and generally no more than 2 but that's enough to start watching an iTunes Store movie straight away.
You might not know it to look at me, but I'm pretty radical.

when i rent a movie on Apple TV I can start watching it within a minute and half after starts downloading and continues to download while i'm watching but there is no interference, slow down it works great. Also for some reason video podcast display a whole let better through Apple TV. And being able to stream my iPhoto library to my tv is a a great why to share them with people.

Doesn't the apple tv buffer the data to ensure, there is no performance issues ?

I believe it does. It stores a buffer on the A4 chip while it continues to download.

Agreed, but when I've had slow speed, the buffer gets caught up, with the streaming ie: not fast enough, now is ok though, had to move home to get better speed!
