Yeah, Barrie, there's been a bit of chat about 10.6 in some other threads, but not about the closing-off support for 10.5 - where did you see that??

Are you sure you don't mean no more support for PowerPC? Apple has always supported the superseded version of Mac OS X. For instance, Sucurity Updates are still provided for Tiger even though the current system is Leopard. As Tiger is no longer the current version of OS X, support for Panther has been dropped.

I think you've got that a bit confused, Barrie. There's rumours about Apple dropping support for PowerPC in the next release (maybe maybe not) but dropping support for an OS less than a year old that they've issued nearly a gigabyte of updates for? Nup.
