Since we have had ATV i've been buying movies from the ATV site within ATV. So any searching I did was strictly via ATV.
Now when i am using iTunes under the sub heading "movies" i see you can buy and rent movies from there as well.
Now seeing this and checking out a movie which I thought wasn't too bad, i previewed it on the iMac and then went over to the lounge room flicked on the ATV, (i did this to show Lisa the preview i just watched) did a search for the movie preview i was just watching and it couldn't find it. That brings up three questions......
So that made me think are the two connected at all?
If they are why doesn't the preview show up on ATV when searching for it?
If I buy the movie via iTunes am I going to be able to watch it via ATV?

I think what has happened is you've previewed a movie in iTunes that at this time is only available to buy, not rent. They only show up on the ATV when they become available for rent. But if you buy a movie, or rent it for that matter, on your Mac, yes, you can watch it via your ATV.

On the old apple tv which I have you can buy or rent movies or tv shows or but or rent via iTunes. But like golfer said with the new apple tv only rentable content will show up. Bit yes you can buy content on iTunes then stream to apple tv.
