great NAS systems? (i know this has been ask before)

hi all


so my last topic for 2010. I know people have asked about NAS systems before but i really wanted to get a proper in depth thread on this one as I have said in a recent thread of mine that my iMac seems to be getting sluggish and I think with all of us a running into storage problems either now or very soon, as time goes on i find it easier to by most of my media content from iTunes rather then physical discs for music. I have been buying my music from iTunes for years now, and i nowr buy my TV shows from iTunes for the convenience (i can watch any where, iPad, iMac, MacBook, Apple TV, and if desperate iPhone) and every now and then I'll buy a movie from iTunes but i'm a sucker for blu-ray still! And i can't wait for video games to be totally digital downloads. so I am looking for a better way to store my growing iTunes and also iPhoto libraries.


So getting to my question, who's using a NAS system? Which brands to you find the most reliable? I'm not into cheap storage that fails, i'd rather pay a little extra and get piece of mind. I currently use a G-Tech external HD for my TimeMachine backup it had some of the best reviews on the web and hasn't skipped a beat. I am tempted to go for a G-Tech NAS but would like to discuss this topic with all the gurus here. My only thought is will Apple to a surprise launch of a NAS like they did with the TimeCapsule right after I bought my G-Tech G- Drive?Posted Image

I have heard good things about the QNAP and Thecus range of NAS enclosures but do not have any experience of these myself.

I am using an HP EX490. It backs up my wife's windows laptop and my MacBook with timemachine. I have 2 1TB hdd's with 2 bays empty. It streams all media to my xbox and any machines on the network including my iPhone and iPad. Has become the centre of our house for sure

I've been running a Thecus N5200 for about two years. It's a 5 bay unit that I've loaded up with five 1TB drives in a RAID5 configuration (giving about 4GB of usable space).

I run my iTunes library from it (with an iMac as the iTunes installation that uses it as storage), save all of my work to it, etc. I think I've rebooted it twice in the time I've had it (one of those was for a firmware update and the other was I turned it off when we were away for three weeks). It's been running for over 230 days this time around (connected to a UPS).

Thecus has a reasonably active developer community that creates add-on software modules. I have PERL, PHP and MySQL running on it and use that as my test webserver before deploying stuff to my live sites.

The only thing it's missing (but doesn't really bother me) is the lack of an iTunes server.

Gidday Anthony, that's a complex system your running, one thing that caught my eye was the UPS. Was it expensive & how long would it last running your system in a power failure. Being in the country we have constant power supply problems, some go for hours, others days at a time, hence my interest.

The UPS is a consumer-level unit from Belkin. It's the one I reviewed for the power feature in the March 2010 issue of the magazine.I have the NAS, my router and iMac connected to it.

Thanks for the info, I just had a quick look to see what's available and there is quiet a bit to choose from, you could spend bucketloads. I did find one UPS for around the $130.00 mark but I will have to read the spec sheet later. As a newbie I don't have access to March 2010 issue, any chance you could post the article up or send a link? Raid / UPS might be the way to go long term, you need the UPS for the raid or risk failure do you not?
