Sony has launched a project that uses GNUstep (open source version of OpenStep) to develop software for new devices. This is an interesting development as it means Sony are looking not just at open source OSs in place of proprietary technology, but are favouring one connected to Apple over Linux. Mac OS X is derived from OpenStep that was developed by NeXT before that company was bought by Apple. Project site is here.

It's an interesting move from Sony. I wonder what it's planning? Have you seen any info on the devices, or is this an investment much further into the future?

That's the first I've seen or heard about it. It will be interesting to watch future developments.

Wow. That was quick. Surely a project needs more than a couple of days to be deemed a failure?

I don't know if they've declared it a failure yet, especially as they have already contributed something to GNUstep. I think it may just be a case of "maybe we'd better think about this more carefully rather than just jumping in".

This story from AppleInsider is a possible answer to why the project was put on hold.
