Meh. I was looking forward to the ATV, but with only HDMI I can't use it. Guess Bluray it is.

I've already pre-ordered an Apple TV. I just hope they're incredibly successful so that we get some good content for it.

Ditto.

Most of them have component out as well. HDMI delivers digital signal and component delivers analogue, but both delver HD. My TV is only 1080i anyway, so I'm not really worried about slight signal degradation over analogue. My DVD player is kaput which is why this is an issue - was holding out to see what Apple did.

but why bother using blu-ray if not using it to full potential? a normal upscaling dvd player would do the job.

ATV = Apple TV. It only has an HDMI output, no other video out like component or composite. My TV doesn't have HDMI (its one of the early CRT HD TVs), so I can't hook up the ATV.

Jamie - but isn't a downscaled Bluray picture going to be better than upscaling a standard def DVD? The Bluray has to toss away a little bit of info, but the DVD has to interpolate a lot more. There is a noticeable difference between HD and SD TV channels. In any event, part of the equation is future proofing. DVD will go away and since I need something anyway, may as well make the move, even if I don't get the full benefit (although I still think I'll get some benefit). OTOH... oh I don't know!

I'm looking forward to picking up one of the new Apple TVs in a month or two. The new smaller one will go in the lounge and enable us to move the old model into the bedroom and get rid of the DVD player as I am slowly ripping everything in to iTunes anyway ... well once I get a bit more disc space as I'll need between 2 and 4 TB to hold everything.
Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it most never use it.

Much easier to understand, although can't be done on an iOS device, when written as tv. You get the Apple symbol using option-shift-K.
