Without starting a poll, I'm just curious as to whether everyone will still get the new phone when it's launched here, or hold off until the reception issue is resolved?

As for me, I'll probably still get it, heck, I've been waiting for ages to upgrade from the 3G, but I wont be upgrading without some disappointment in the back of my mind. I know the issue can be fixed with a case, but still the thought of the phone not working as it should is disheartening.

What's everyone else's thoughts on the phone and what are you going to do?

I'd be interested to know what everyone's thinking too. I think the staggered release might actually be a good thing for us in this case, as it should let us see whether there is a real problem or not.

For anyone who wants to know a bit more about the problem, and whether it will be an issue, check out this article.

In the meantime, this is a brilliant adaptation of the Jobs/Gates images: http://www.lolboom.com/iphone-testing.

Oh, and I'll still be getting an iPhone 4. Hopefully getting it on Telstra will mean the signal is good even if I hold it on the seam.

yep i'm getting it. i was told today it's getting released July 24th i even pre-order it. Can't wait.

and the whole antenna thing doesn't bother me, i mean it's gizmodo making most of the noise about this and they obviously have it in for Apple now, so i'm sure they will do anything to make the iPhone 4 problem look worse then it is, and anyway i'm sure Apple will rectify the problem.

Not a CHANCE... To many problems for me to plonk down the cash on 8 new iphones for the business, the whole reception thing, plus the stupid glass back on it is just plan ludicrous, next phone for me will now be android based, with a much better build quality, and an operating system that will trounce apple in 12 months.

TL - Put a case on them, and both problems will be solved in one.

Plus, apparently the reception problem can be solved with a software update - we'll see about that one tongue.gif

And, in tests that have been carried out by various bloggers, even when being held in the 'death grip', the iPhone 4 has better reception than the 3GS.

And by all reports, the build quality on the iPhone 4 is unsurpassed, and once the antenna issue is sorted out, which I'm sure it will (heck, many of them aren't having the issue!), it will be a truly great phone.

I'm getting one.

I agree entirely, skyhawkmatthew. But I am a bit of a fanboy...

Looks like 23 July might be the day, so only three weeks left to wait!

I'm a fanboy too....but this issue has really hit me.......my beloved Apple has made a product with a flaw....how could they......I just can't get it out of my head.....arghhh.....It's driving me nuts....

I just don't get how this issue passed the testing phase....let alone the R&D phase.......it's like Apple have become really cocky and thought, "Hey, we will produce a phone that is totally impractical but looks and feels amazing, because we know we can, and we will sell millions"....well perhaps this is a wake up call for them.....maybe they needed this to keep them on track....who knows......really baffling????

Anyway, just to test things out I went into a Telstra shop and tried out the HTC Desire running Android 2.1, and I have to say that is one nice phone......also Android is quite amazing, and you know I think TL is right in saying that Android might surpass iOS 4 in features etc....

But you know what, the one thing that Apple has over Android is 'SIMPLICITY' yet it's as powerful...I found Android not user friendly and that's where Apple 'Trounces' over Android!

So with my fanboyism there is no way I could buy another phone or use another operating system besides Apple's.... it just wouldn't feel right, and I'm sure others on this forum feel the same way, even if Android surpasses Apple in features etc...

So the reception issue is fixed with a case....viola....solved.....and it's not like you weren't going to get a case with your new iPhone 4 TL?

Also the build quality is superb on the iPhone 4, much better than other Android phones...it's just made of glass, which breaks if dropped.......so that doesn't make it bad build quality.

Can't wait to get my new iPhone 4!

just because it has glass on the back doesn't make it a bad products, every iPhone to date has a glass front, so by adding it to the back doesn't make more vulnerable. Glass is way more scratch resistant and much stronger then plastic. plastic is a cheap product that scratches easy.

oh an bornstein don't be so upset. the antenna thing isn't happening to every iPhone 4 and apparently they can fix it with a software update, do you really think apple would just let this slide. gizmodo are blowing this story way out of proportion. Apple haven't begun to make bad products. steve jobs still feels strongly about making great products, see his thoughts about the gizmodo/ iPhone saga here:

I have a feeling it has something to do with the secrecy of the testing - we all know that the phone Gizmodo acquired was hiding in a 3GS-esque enclosure. I expect that 99% of the testing units were all disguised similarly and so the problem with hands' contact with the antennae wouldn't have been apparent in these cases.

I just find that hard to believe....it's a phone....they would have tested the Antennae in a number of different ways. Even at Apple HQ. Also they would have experts design the Antennae and surely they would have known this is an issue...really odd.

Thanks JamieZ for making me feel better about the issue.

I'm still getting one...:-)

Ok OK, yes IF i was getting an Iphone 4, I would be buying a case, I cant deny that.. my issue is more to the point of, if you want to make the phone work like every other phone including the 3G and the 3GS, you are basically forced to buy some sort of case, to make up for apples short comings, in there design and implementation process. Imagine if you bought a new car and buried away in the fine print it said to make this car work properly you have to Run Premium at 15 cents a litre more than standard, YOU would be outraged, and the extra cost, Why does apple get off so easy??

I have also played with the Desire in a Telstra store and now hold a similar view. The problem with the Android apps is that they rely on the user pressing physical buttons (on the face of the device) to perform various functions in the app. To further compound the problem, each manufacturer can vary the number of buttons and hence require a custom version of, say, a calendar app.

The UI is also not very good and, as noted on the last page in the July issue of AMW, just getting apps from the Android Marketplace is a pain. In brief, as also stated on the same page, Android devices are for geeks; real people use devices from Apple.

I know I'm doing a back flip here (although I still think Apple deserves a boot up the backside). But by some reports, it doesn't work worse than previous models. It works better, and the reception issues drop it down to the same.

Do some research. The iPhone 4 signal strength is a non-issue. It is only apparent if you have a bad signal from your network provider.

Move on people, nothing to see

As for TL and his Android based iPhone killer, you have really fallen off your perch now!
