i know you can burn your music cds to itunes and choose which type of file format you wish to convert too in the process,but is there a way of converting with your music thats already in your itunes library?ie not from a cd,but converting whats already in your library from say mp3 to apple lossless?do i have to delete my library and reinstall to get music from mp3 to apple lossless[aac]?be good to know and time saving if this is possible,?regs david.

Go to iTunes preferences and set your import settings to what you want the music to be. AAC or Apple lossless

Then highlight the songs you want to convert, then Advanced-> Covert to (whateverformatyouchoseinprefs)

Then sit back and wait.

I just helped my brother in law convert from WMA to AAC so he can use Airport Express to stream the music to his home theatre.

I'm working on him going for AppleTV next!

Yep that's exactly right - of course, converting MP3 to AAC is a little pointless in that the audi loss has already occurred so you won't see any improvement in quality after the conversion....

great,thank you im glad i asked,will try this anyway cos i love to know etc,but according to the next reply by mr david holloway its pointless as the quality has been lost thru the first conversion,and the reason i enquired was to improve the quality,apparently aac is better than mp3 or so i believe.regs david

i had a gut feeling that this would be the case,is why i enquired, so it looks like i might have to re-burn my music from cds and this time choose aac instead of mp3 etc,may i enquire if apple lossless is the best choice for quality among the available file formats?regs david b.

no, just go into your iTunes library and it will create a copy in whatever format you want, instructions as per above post by pmoeser. Once you have your copy, delete the other. I'd recommend AAC rather than Lossless.

That's right, but what I was getting at is if you are wanting the original quality of the CD, converting from MP3 to AAC etc will not deliver that

thats good to know ,thank you mr holloway,i was interested in the different file formats not just in relation to the quality of sound but also for how compatible the file types are with most domestic cd players,ie car stereos,portable stereos and the like,as you would well know they dont all play the same file types,and my intention was to copy[just between you and me]some music to blank audio cd for my aunts car stereo,which is fairly antiquated[maybe 10 years old]after trying with mp3 it did not play on her car cd player so was going to try different format,thanks for the knowledge ,it all comes in very handy,with gratitude david b.
