Hi Matthew
Sorry to bother you with trivia this side of the Festive Season. I am a new Leopard user. I try to be conscientious in my housekeeping & perform the 'periodic' jobs on a regular basis. The only one I seem to be having trouble with is the 'weekly' one. I did this today, but the message is typical:
Sat Dec 29 11:41:50 EST 2007
Rebuilding locate database:
mktemp: mkdtemp failed on /var/folders/mP/mP46KnGhGvyvsL5U0sfM0++++TI/-Tmp-//locateH420AxD56f: Permission denied
Rebuilding whatis database:
makewhatis: /usr/share/man//usr/share/man:/usr/X11/man: No such file or directory
makewhatis: /usr/X11/man//usr/share/man:/usr/X11/man: No such file or directory
-- End of weekly output --
Should I be worried? I've tried using Cocktail (Leopard version) to rebuild the databases, but it makes no difference.
Thank you. Happy New Year to you & all the gang!
BTW I can't find the 'SEND' button - only the 'Preview Post' - so I hope this reaches you.

Hi Mike,
I'll be moving this topic over to the Help forum on the main site as soon as it's live (Friday afternoon, fingers crosed). Look for a response then. Meanwhile have you tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions?
