Well I just couldn't wait any longer and went for another drive to the PO Box to get my AMW Mag. In the "Mac Gems" section (page 24) there is an article on iTunes software.

Has anyone purchased this?

I think it would do me the world of goodness as I have my own library of songs, which has been decimated by all the purchases from the girls. Our music tastes differ somewhat and for me to make any new play lists it's a task in a half wading through all their crap.

Have a look please, tell me what you think.....i just like the thought of having multiple libraries for (Mick, Lisa, Alexandra, Georgia), each person has multiple devices so that when they sync they just sync to their own library......

It let's you have multiple libraries my biggest issue is the amount of songs we all have as a family and having separate libraries for each individual in the home.
At present it's all humped into one library.

Hmm I guess I don't have that problem, I technically don't have any kids in the house, to hog my iTunes library, and the kids I do have, have there on macs.

Lucky you saw that Mick...Macworld should have pointed that out in the review.

A way around what you are trying to do is create different iTunes Libraries for each person in your household and this way each persons music would be separate to each others.

The way you do this is you hold down the 'Option' Key before you launch iTunes. Once you launch iTunes while holding down the option key you will be presented with a dialogue box like the one below:

Posted Image

Then click on the 'Create Library button' to create a different Library and name it accordingly.

You can do this any number of times to create as many libraries as you want.

Then the other family members will have their own library to play with. They can connect their own iPods, iPod Touches etc and will be able to access their own music to sync to their device.

Now when you launch iTunes in the future, if you want to open your library, you hold down the 'Option Key' before launching iTunes and select the 'Choose Library' button and select yours.

If you were to just open iTunes without holding down the 'Option' key iTunes will open to the last library that was opened.

Let me know if you think this is a workable solution for you.

No worries JZ... I just learnt that iTunes could create additional libraries...I never knew that until today...seems obvious...but I guess if you never need to use a feature, you don't know about it until you need it....if that makes sense.

I love these forums....it makes me explore more and more things from people's questions...things i would never think about, and I really enjoy finding out solutions for people and learning from other people at the same time. It's great....

The software Mick was looking at would actually be quite good for his needs, but it does have that limitation. I'm glad he didn't buy it.

No worries Mick..... I hope that works for you.... I just learnt about this today as well.... so we all learn from each other...it's great...:-)

Another way around it is to create separate user accounts for each family member...so if this idea doesn't work...maybe consider separate user accounts.

also another way to stop cluttered iTunes libriaries is to just create different user accounts on your Mac, then everyone gets their own iTunes library, iPhoto Library and own documents etc.

Well guy's, i spent a couple of hours setting up the libraries, the time consumer was getting all of the iTunes library into each individuals library. To do this i sync'ed each i Pod, iPod touch, iPhone 3GS & 4 to each library, this did the personal touches apps etc, but not the entire library so i copied the original iTunes

library to each individuals library. Then deleted the songs that they didn't want in the library. It also didn't transfer their playlists over.

To add to that I had to do the same with the podcasts / movies, move them individually over from the existing library.

There is one issue i can see here, is that if i download a song and want to give it to Lisa, i will have to manually transfer it into her library, it's not a biggie but just need to remember to do it.

Thanks guys again a good outcome, JZ setting up new accounts could work for the individuals, the requirement is by iTunes is to have a credit card linked to each account so would that mean one credit card for the four different accounts? When i set up Lisa's account in the early days i did it with my credit card, if i

remember rightly id wouldn't allow me to use my card more than once, but i could be wrong as it was sometime ago.

The program you were looking at purchasing would have saved you so much work if only it supported Apps etc. I wonder if there is another program like it that does??

Now that you have created the separate libraries, are they all still linked to your iTunes account through your credit card? Just curious about that one.

Glad it worked for you though.
