As some of you may know, I'm unable to use Safari at the moment (without it constantly annoying me) because it doesn't like me for some reason. 10.6.3 (which I'm currently in the process of downloading) may fix this, or it may not. As a result, I've been using Chrome. But now that Google's been evil and snuggled up with Adobe, I need a new browser.

If possible, it should use WebKit. It should be fast. It should be light on resources. It should be rock-solid in terms of stability. It should be secure. It should be nice to look at. It should preferably have a nice icon since it's going to be on display in my Dock. It should also, if possible, have a sensible name if possible (so nothing with names like Bouncy Bouncy CineBrowser Lappldomness etc.). It should also be open-source. It should also support basic features such as some form of private browsing...

Any suggestions?

I thought about Firefox, but it's just too resource hungry. Other than that it's pretty good (apart from not being WebKit based...) smile.gif

Any other suggestions?

More information please. Specifically, why/what is annoying you?

My problem in Safari is outlined in this thread.

Good news. 10.6.3 appears to have fixed up my Safari problems (you'll know if it hasn't! tongue.gif). This means I don't need a new browser. I have Safari biggrin.gif
w00t!

Last night I tried out some others, like Shiira and Camino, but they weren't really my cup of tea. Speaking of cups of tea, I think I'll go and have one now...

safari. is. back.

Oh dear. It's happening again. Turns out 10.6.3 didn't fix it after all. So...Any other suggestions for a replacement browser?

Fixed. It was an https address instead of an http.

Cheers
Dave

PS: Molecule, I keep going back to Safari as the others just don't cut it for me. But have you tried Camino, Flock, Sunrise, Stainless, Shiira or Omniweb 5?

ok so i read that thread, i kinda get that not connected to internet message sometimes but only when i try open a web page to quickly when i've just booted up my Mac or woken it from sleep and it hasn't connected to my airport yet, it always takes a second or two to connect. if i had to choose another browser I'd go for firefox as i said before, but one question do you have AppleCare? or have you tried calling Apple and asking them?

Just tried Opera, Sunrise, and Stainless. My thoughts:

Opera: Really slow. Interface a tad clunky. Overall not that impressed. Which is a shame, because I really want to like it, but I just...can't.

Sunrise: Fast. Interface is nice enough. Not entirely sure I want to use it full time (yet), but certainly shows promise.

Stainless: Fast. Sensible interface. Sadly lacks nice tab animations... Overall, I'm not totally sold on it yet, but shows promise.

For the time being I might go to Firefox (because I know I like it...shame it's such a resource hog...and those awful awful memory leaks...), until I can find a more permanent solution.

Oh and Jamie: No, I don't have AppleCare (I'm stingy like that) smile.gif

I'd make a genius appointment. Not sure what they charge for software support or if they even do it.

If you aren't close enough, then it might be time for a HDD clean-out!

TL and mickdevlin have posted tips on good ways to do it. A fresh install might cure what ails ya.

Genius appointment = unfeasible. I don't live where there's an Apple Store.
Fresh install: I'm pretty sure it was happening before my last install...can't be certain though. Still, I'd rather not download all those updates again.

If you don't want to download updates more than once then turn off Software Update and download them manually. That's what I do. I also back them up and burn them to DVD so that I always have a local copy.
