The rumour mill is running over time today, with a story that the iPhone 3Gs, will not run iOS5, you will need an iPhone 4 or better still and iPhone 5 with the extra grunt to run it.

So if the story is accurate, how many people out there will run out and buy and iphone 4 or 5 when it becomes available, or will you simply say stuff it, and continue to run iOS 4 until your contract expires and by then buy an all bells and whistles iPhone 6 when they magically appear, in another 12 months time ?

This comes as no surprise to me, as iOS becomes more sophisticated, so does the hardware that needs to run it.

I heard that Widgets will finally be released in iOS 5, along with a much better notification system....so to run widgets, you definitely need a more powerful chip........ I am just glad I have an iPhone 4, otherwise I would have upgraded.

Bring on the widgets.... I've been hanging out for that for ages..... let's just hope it all comes true!

So when do you guys think iOS 5 will be released....surely Apple wont make us wait till the end of the year when they release the next iPhone.....???

Pffft. Widgets are a waste of time.
You might not know it to look at me, but I'm pretty radical.

I think widgets will be awesome, rather than launching something like a weather app, or a twitter app, you could press widget and get a quick snap shot of what's happening.

I'm with Dylstra, widgets are a waste of space. Do you currently use widgets in OSX?

Agreed Ken.

And yes Golfer...I do use them in OSX from time to time. Just used the calculator today.

The thing that annoys me about Widgets in OSX is that you actually have to access them, they can't reside on the desktop. I know with a terminal command you can have them appear on your desktop, but then they appear on the front of every window that is active. This is probably one feature that Windows has that I like...... ouch, did I just say that......slap me please....:-)

When I say Widgets, I want them to be able to be active on the Home Screen without having to actually access them. In that way, a quick glance at the home screen will allow me to see updated weather, facebook stream, twitter stream etc etc.

My iPhone is not a toy, so I don't really care about changes as long as I can still use it as a world-wide GPS and carry music and my French dictionary and so on, why would I change?

When it dies, I'll upgrade it. I don't have a contract, just a few pre-paid sims depending on which country I happen to be in.

I'm not the sort of customer Apple wants to support.

And I use widgets often, for time zones, weather in a couple of places, currency conversions, other (volume weight distance) conversions, TV programmes and tides.

Cheers,

P

Widgets on a phone vs Mac are different - different device, different interface. I think notifications is the thing that really needs updating. But I'll only upgrade when my phone dies or doesn't do what I need anymore.

I soon grew tired of midgets, sorry widgets!! on the MBP but that may be different on the iPhone.
I too am not surprised that 3GS will be left out. That leapfrogging of hardware and software has been the way of computing for since the first computer.

Widgets on Andrpid (which is the reference for iOS sisters) appear on then lock screen or home screen - email, weather, tweets, texts, etc. The new notification system goes someway to addressing this.

But as for the 3GS being left out - yet another rumor bites the dust. Surprisingly the 3gs was announced as getting ios5.

The 3GS won't be left out. iOS5 is going to work with the 3GS. Infact I upgraded my friends 3GS to the beta today.

How did the 3GS handle it? Was it much slower?

I still can't believe widgets weren't added to iOS 5. Slightly disappointing. There must be a reason though. Uses too much battery power perhaps?? Still there has to be a work around.

Jail break.

But seriously (I've tried but it didn't work, and still no untethered JB for iPad), I think the way notifications are set up may partly alleviate lack of widgets. Looks like weather and stocks (which I don't care about) are at the top of the notifications centre or whatever it's called.

Widgets were kind of added to iOS 5, within the notifications app. Slide down from the top and reveal stocks and weather. Then all of you notifications. (I said kinda)

Do we really need widgets on such a small screen ? On an iPad might be a different story.

Of course we need widgets.. Anything to compete with Android is a good thing....:)

Actually I feel widgets would be of benefit to me on both my iPhone and iPad.
