Hi
I was just wondering if anyone could offer there opion of the above camera.
I have been looking at geeting a new camera, and from what I can read this seems to quite a good camera for
a beginner. Which is me.
I see there is a price variance on the nett from about about $890.00 upto $1400.00 for a twin lens kit which includes the the one to 55 and then from 75 to 300 i think or 75 to 250.

I was hoping to pay less than a $1000.00 for a camera that hope I will be able to learn from about and have for years.

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

The 550D is a very capable little camera, and it'll see you through until you want to start doing something really serious (or develop a serious addiction!). It's a scaled-down version of the 7D, so it's got excellent video capabilities, and while it won't shoot quite as fast as the 7D, it's great for stills.

I'd strongly advise that you not purchase the twin-lens kit. Just get the single lens, and then when you get a bit more experienced, look into buying something specifically suited for your needs. Kit lenses traditionally aren't the best quality, so you'd be better off spending a couple of hundred bucks on a fixed focal-length 50mm f1.8... But buying lenses is a whole other ballgame, so I'd advise you keep it simple to begin with.

Also; if you can get your retailer to throw in a copy of Lightroom, you won't be sorry!

Enjoy!

Michael, i have been using Canon cameras for some time now and at present am using the 550D without any problems. There was an issue with the 17-85 zoom but that has been resolved.
I have included a link to a Australian based Hong Kong company that gives great service and the prices are more than competitive. In the last three years i have bought both camera bodies and lens from them.

Blue Crane digital puts out a very good series of instructional DVD's for both the basics and then advanced.
Hope this is of some help.

Hi

Thanks for both your replies. I am not sure what a 7D is but not knowing means I most probably do not need it.

I have never heard of Lightroom but will have a look, I do have Pixelmator but find it very hard to use.

Thank you for the Blue Crane link I will have a look at them.

Not have a great knowledge it sounds like I would be better off just to buy the body and then get a lens fixed focal-length 50mm f1.8 and see how I go.

Thanks

Hi Michael,

Lightroom is a database and photo editing program - kinda like Apple's Aperture, but I personally prefer it.

You're doing exactly the right thing buying a 50mm f1.8 and the body only - that makes me really happy to hear! You're going to love it!

Apart from the economics (you really do want to buy the best lenses you can afford when the time comes), purists will say this is a very good move from the perspective of developing your photography also.

Ive had a low end canon dslr for about 3 odd years now,and its still taking exceptional photos, and functioning perfectly,so i can vouch for the brand from that perspective, they say canon and nikon are head to head, but doing your homework is essential for anything like this, the folks here are no dummies when it comes to photography.
i woke up and i was breathing, another good day!!!
