In the good old days before forum software became available cheaply I used to run a mail group for a few hundred people using a lovely bit of kit called Macjordomo which was a FREE Mac version of the then ubiquitous Unix Majordomo list server software.
It still exists, but it hasn't been updated since PPC's have disappeared.
I am now thinking about running a new group, with just a handful of members to start, building to maybe several hundred.
I want to use the private mail group model rather than Yahoo Groups for a number of reasons, but spam control, moderation and targeted marketing are three of them!
Has anyone any idea of how I can set up such a group? ie is there any software that I may be able to use (preferably free of course!) that will allow a group mail from any member, or do I just go and set up a Yahoo group and be done with it?
Cheers,
P

Perhaps I've posted in haste!
It seems in 2005 there was an update for osx and it still seems to work!
Hmmm... it's like steam powered mail lists!
I'll see if I can get it going!

5 YEARS AGO.... Damn thats one pretty poorly supported piece of software
And i guess that sad part is if you do manage to hobble it together, i am guessing after the next OS update when ever it is will kill it off again.

It was marvellous really, because it allowed one to run a mail list server through a POP account. All that's needed is a couple of email addresses.
I suspect that POP servers will kill it these days because it's technically relaying mail, but I can only try.
Otherwise I'll have to see what I can do with Mailman, but that needs a mail server and a substantially clever person to set it up.
Failing that, I'll just start a Yahoo group I suppose>

OK I know it's been a while, and clearly there are not too many people interested in running mail discussion groups out of their hip pockets!
Macjordomo still works, and I've got a tidy little group with a dozen or so participants running. It even takes emailed admin commands!
I have it running via my ISP (MrT) through email accounts (paid) at Fastmail.FM. The grand thing about it for my purposes is that it doesn't have to be running all the time, doesn't need a dedicated server, and it's FREE!
