Couldn't help adding my $0.02 to this article on the frontpage.
I've just started exploring geotagging on the cheap. There are a couple of GPS apps for the iPhone. Geologtag is made especially for this. Trails apparently also works. (The apps have to be able to export the data as a GPX file).
You can use your iPhone to track your journey, and then Houdahgeo to map the downloaded data to your images. You then import them into iPhoto. Evidently the workflow is important - more detailed instructions are around.
Anyways, those GPS devices in the article are cheap, the iPhone/Houdah combo makes it even cheaper if you don't mind the compromises - it's not for GPS power users.

The iPhone does an ok job of geotagging images, sometimes it is a bit off though.
You mentioned Trails Xenophos and similar to that is EveryTrail. I've been using that for a few weeks and it's great. Using a GPS enabled device, you can plot the exact path you travelled on an interactive map, with your photos positioned on the map at the exact location you took them.
Here's the description of EveryTrail from their site -
You can add your trips to Facebook and you can also download your trips as a KML file to view your trip in 3D in Google Earth.
Here's my trips so far on my EveryTrail page.

That's pretty cool. I'm going to have to think about a strategy for this when we go to NZ later in the year.

Is it possible to teach Google Earth the names of places it doesn't yet recognise? I try to add "places" to my iPhoto library, but the Google Map system used doesn't know the name of the place I want to tag. I've tagged it via my Google account, but when I try to tag my photos with this location, it says it doesn't know it...
