I'm thinking about getting a DAB radio, and I stumbled upon this one

http://www.pure.com/products/product.asp?Product=VL-61294

Very, very cool.

By the way anyone have any recommendations for good quality DAB radios or AMW how about a review of DAB radios in the magazine?

...also it seems I passed the 400 mark for forum posts, look out TL only 8100 more posts till i catch you wave.gif

I'm pretty sure there are a few reviews coming up in the mag. In the meantime, I've reviewed the REVO Domino D3 here.

thanks xavier.

i read that review last night. looks like a really cool system thumb.gif although I think I'd rather a stand alone DAB and I am at the point where, just like I don't need a camera on every device I own, I d don't need an iPod dock on every device I own. It doesn't have to hook up to my iTunes library or any thing I would just like a good DAB radio. smile.gif

Hey JZ

You really need to see if you can try before you buy, or get one from a shop that allows returns. So far I haven't been able to get any digital stations at my place in southeast Melbourne, but all the analogue signals are very clear. (There's no inbetween with digital radio, you either get a great signal or nothing at all.) And a lot of reviewers I know either get nothing or only a few stations. Things are at a point now when I'm wondering if it's worth us doing a planned DAB+ Lab Test in November.

Cheers
Dave

PS: Tivoli Audio make brilliant radios of every description, so have a look at the NetWorks. It's $999, but you get what you pay for with Tivoli. I have a unit in to test, so I just have to find somewhere where I can get a signal!

I struggle with paying that much for freaking radio! It had better be pretty damned sweet and play what I want when I want crystal clear. Sorry, I just don't see the point. I'm waiting until they come WAAAAY down in price.

Well i live at the bottom of a hill, so I guess no digital radio for me, I have a 30 foot TV antenna, and still cant get TV, so i rely on Foxtel to watch telly.

The reception problems are the reason that I can't see digital radio ever catching on.

If it doesn't get better soon, other (cheaper) technologies such as streaming may kill it.

Dead right. The signals are weaker than FM, the bands are really narrow and the stations seem to be lowering bit rates in order to jam in more channels. And when you CAN actually receive stations, they certainly aren't delivering the "CD quality" that we were told to expect – in fact, the data is so compressed it's generally below FM quality.

It's irritating as digital radio has so much potential.

That is flabbergasterating. I can't believe they'd do that. What exactly is the point of DAB if it doesn't deliver superior audio.

My point is that digital radio has no point; streaming is superior and DAB will go the way of AM stereo (does anyone remember that?)

There are quite a few nifty internet radio apps on the App Store - have you considered that approach JamieZ? You would have access to thousands of digital stations from around the world and more and more Oz stations are appearing in the apps. This approach gets around the reception problems, providing, of course, that you have reasonable broadband access. The sky is the limit when it comes to how you set up your "internet radio" in your house with all sorts of wireless internet solutions and iP* docks and amplifiers. The bonus is that you can take it with you when you leave home - providing that you have an iPhone and acceptable 3G coverage.

Well I tested out DAB radio today, very clear very impressive.. but also rather expensive, and the guy at harvey norman, Said I cant guarantee you this sort of reception in your house.. sad.gif

He said its very Hit and Miss, which is really disappointing, He said its like digital telly, one minute the reception is amazing, and 2 seconds later, the screen cracks, and makes it un watchable for a second or two.

Three streaming apps are covered by Danny Gorog in this month's AMW.
