I know most of you have Apple Tvs, But the Boss wants me to buy a Tivo, cause our video recorder has died, and she cant tape CSI, ( I don't like CSI so i don't care)... But I do like peace and harmony in the house :D

So who has a TIVO and are they better than an Apple TV? O and i see you can buy a connector or something for it, so you can stream to your Mac or something like that.

TL, i have the IQ set top box with my Foxtel subscription and run and record all my programs from there, the only things i watch live are the news and some sports programs, would imagine that TIVO's work on the same principle.
Being able to record series is a real bonus.
I also have the Apple TV and find that they compliment each other.

It's a case of horses for courses. TiVo is designed for live TV and the recording and playback thereof. Apple TV is designed for use on ITunes (store and library) only and this would mean that unless CSI was available on the iTunes store (and you wanted to buy each episode) then the TiVo would probably be the better choice.

Hope that helps your decision making.

Sounds like you have made up your mind TL, the pay TV that Gordon was talking about would be the option i would say would be the easiest, well for me it would as we have the recordable decoder box which can of course record programs on the general free to air channels as well as the pay TV ones. Not

knowing anything at all about tivo, at that price and if it records free to air TV, your on a winner baby. What was that you said about peace & harmony........

I didn't realise the price had dropped so significantly, now I'm tempted to get one as well. I think there is a TiVo app for iPhone and iPad which works like a remote control but I'm not sure it allows you to record a show if you are away from home. That's something that would be handy.

Dont get to excited rachp, they sucker punched me :P $299.00 for refurbished one with a 90 day warranty, so I got stuck with a New one for $499.00, and THEN.. O by the way you also need a HDMI cable $89.00, and if you want sound through you home stereo its another $29.00, and if you want it to make sure, you never miss a show you need the WIFI Modem, for $69.95, and did we mention, there is an options 500 GiG hard drive available, so the box doesnt get to full to fast ( it only holds 20 hours of video) for another $250.00 :jawdrop:

And yes I got a TIVO, but NOOOOOO hard Drive, Blow that

TL, a lot of these purchases seem to take on a life of their own when they start talking about optional extras.
The motor car industry has a lot to answer for.

Well done, TL. I use a TiVo because the Apple TV lacks a decent tuner or two ... and I love it.

I use Tivo Transfer (which comes bundled with Toast 10) to connect an old iMac to my TiVo and automatically download certain shows via the iMac to a permanently-on 1TB LaCie by Starck external hard drive. This frees up space on the TiVo hard drive and means that we can watch older shows on the iMac.

If we want to watch them back on the big plasma attached to the TiVo, I use the Mac2Tivo app (also from Roxio) to quickly upload the show back to the TiVo. All really painless.

I used to have Foxtel, but got rid of it because of the endless repeats of dross and because Aussie free-to-air TV is the world's best. Seriously!

The edge the Apple TV really has, though, is the range of movies to buy or rent. I hire the odd movie via CASPA on the TiVo, which seems a bit slow and certainly doesn't have a huge selection. My daughter wanted a Harry Potter movie the other day, for instance, and there wasn't one on there.

Do you think it's worth me doing a TiVo-Mac integration yarn in the mag? Is there enough interest?

Cheers
Dave

You bet Iam interested Dave, as I said before I know little of TiVo and if what Iam reading looks

like a better option than what's going on with our selection at present. Anything that can give

broader range & less dross has to be better.

Love my TiVo. I have an old hacked S1 model for a few years now. I haven't had a look at the new TiVos.

As has been pointed out, it all depends on how you get your media. If it's from TV then TiVo is the way to go; from the internet then a hacked Apple TV.

One of the things I liked about my TiVo is that it was a good way to get into tinkering with electrical components. Being a hacked model meant that there were plenty of challenges along the way!
You might not know it to look at me, but I'm pretty radical.

Go for it Dave, I would like to now more about the tricks you can use it for, and maybe Dysltra, can toss in a few tricks that we don't know about, to make thing even useful.

Ok maybe I'll re-think that option. I might go for just a standard PVR like the ones IceTV sell. Although just looking at them now they also charge extra for a wifi dongle.

Hey Rach ... also remember that the TiVo EPG is free for life, but IceTV slugs you $13 a month or $99 a year. I've had TiVo for just on two years, which has saved me $200!

I'm still unsure about TiVo. What's the difference between that and a PVR which uses an EPG like iceTV or Freeview. I don't want to record heaps of stuff to keep but I would like to be able to record a show when I am out, either from a dedicated iPhone App or a website. Obviously the PVR would have to be connected to the internet for that to happen, preferably wirelessly. Does anyone use one other than a tivo that they can recommend? I've had a look on the iceTV site and there are quite a few options but again i'd love to know if anyone has one.

Thanks
Rach

I use my iPhone to record stuff to my Foxtel I.Q 2 box when I am out, which is rather handy, but I haven been able to find an app yet that lets me do it to my TiVo yet.
