Shame on you all.

Don't include me in that statement, please. I've been a big knocker of the "cheap" journalism at Steve Job's expense!! See Post#4 at this link.

Well at his age he's got nothing better to do biggrin.gif wink.gif wink.gif

Sorry to jump in here, I know I've got no particular place saying so, but isn't that a bit of an inappropriate remark, David? Coming from TL or someone I'd think it's maybe a little out of line but what they hey -- but from an AMW contributor? Or has Gazza said it's OK to make fun of him for his age? What about other forum members of similar vintage -- would they be offended by such a remark?

Maybe I should shut up now.

Thanks for the defence Matthew - this has been a long running saga today as a result of my Podcast Feedback "shot" at Danny Gorog. David was just joining in the hilarity, at my expense of course, because like me he had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek..

gazza

I suggest you head over to the Podcast Forum and read the initiator of all this character assassination!!! It's Danny's fault??

Policy in my day was we didn't speculate about Steve Jobs's health. I said in one of the podcasts that if his ability to perform the job was affected then it was worth the shareholders knowing, but we the general public have no right to intrude on the man's privacy -- none. Full stop. I don't know if that policy is still in place, but I hope it is.

And I'll add one more thing. Steve Jobs owes Apple nothing, and he owes the "Mac faithful" nothing. What he has achieved in the past decade is something remarkable, and the company and its customers have reaped enormous rewards. If he decides that it's time to move on from Apple, take some time with his family and enjoy the rewards of his extraordinary talents, I'd support him 100 percent on that. Whether it's because of his health or not. He has earned peace, and all these people who seem to think that we made him rich so he has to keep performing for us until he's cold in the ground should just bear that in mind. You paid your money, you got your iPod, your Mac, your iPhone, your whatever -- what more do you think Steve owes you?

end of rant. Sorry if I seem grumpy. I'm suffering an attack of gout at the moment and it's making me grumpy.

Did you read my Post#26 above clinton1550? I found something similar to you. The quoted Apple figure for upgrading to iTunes Plus for me DOES NOT match the "calculations" as they have stated, no matter how you look at it, typo or not!!! However, unlike you I decided to upgrade because the cost was not onerous (most of my iTunes library is from ripped CDs) When this kerfuffle is sorted out I will "hit" Apple for the refund if it's due!

I started typing the post when I was on page 1, I hadn't even gotten as far as your post but yes I did read it.

I'd like to know how Apple tallies their figures, something has evidently gone wrong.

US Macworld has an article that explains how DRM-free music in iTunes works. Just remember that the prices quoted are those for the US iTunes Store.

Keynote was average I thought. I wish there was a little more in the way of desktop Macs, I really wanted to see a new Mini and Mac Pro!

iLife and iWork look exciting though! biggrin.gif

And a 17" MBP with Anti-Glare screen option should shut some people up. wink.gif

I've downloaded the keynote podcast and I have started watching it. I watched as far as the demo of iMovie, then I stopped. I thought to myself, this is way to cool, I have to show this to my dad. So I grabbed him and we both sat in front of my computer and watched the keynote.

We watched the iMovie bit first, every couple of minutes we would pause it and say to each other that is just so awesome, remember how long that used to take? Holy crap! Did you see that? Wow!

We were really excited by the demo of iMovie.

Then we watched the demo of iPhoto. Again we were sitting there in absolute amazement, we paused it every couple of minutes to talk about a particular feature. I am very impressed by Apple's attention to detail, Faces is so well thought out, the way the photos automatically focus on a face, the way you confirm who is in the photo. Did you see the part were Phil showed us how to confirm multiple photos? Just drag the mouse across, so easy, so simple and so amazing.

I haven't watched anything else yet, just iPhoto and iMovie but so far the keynote has been a blast.

Apart from one thing.

My dad commented on Phil's showmanship, he said that he wasn't being very emotive, you could tell when he was getting exited because he would talk faster but beyond that he wasn't doing much to get us excited about the products, but then the products themselves were enough to get us excited.

And here's something of note, my dad doesn't pay attention to any of the Apple news or rumours. He didn't know that Steve usually does the keynote so that is his totally unbiased opinion, Phil isn't a good presenter, his skills do need to be developed. But the things he was talking about more than make up for it. I look forward to watching the rest of the podcast and to purchasing iLife 09.

Thanks for your observations clinton1550. I haven't watched the keynote but have read heaps about it. I cannot understand the way it has polarised the community so startlingly. About 50% say "boring" and the rest say wow like you, nothing in between. I think our "bloody" press (or many of them anyway) start up the rumours and get lots of people so excited about certain possibilities that when they don't happen we get the boring response. We can't have a revolutionary (iPhone??) development every 6 months but as you say the new iLife suite features are actually really good, as are the developments with iWork, including the iWork.com feature. The Apple presentation was slick and well prepared as usual but apparently many people want some startling new wiz-bang offering at the Expo and WWDC - just hard to please, I guess.

I think a lot of people were really hoping this keynote would be a disappointment so they could put the boot into Apple for not supporting the Expo. This people have seized on the keynote's faults and are now absolutely loving the opportunity to complain. Myself, I am so looking forward to using iPhoto's face recognition stuff that I wouldn't care if that was the only thing Schiller showed off.

Incidentally, I've seen Schiller present before -- in fact I saw one if his first presentations as an Apple employee a dozen or so years ago, before Jobs came back. He can be very entertaining. I suspect the weight of expectation -- and the knowledge that he couldn't possibly win -- affected him this time.

It was drawn out. the features in iLife could have and has been in past MacWorld's taken maybe 10 minutes highlighting the main features, i looked at the timeline and it was a 3rd of the presentation, i was yawning and so was the audience in the room, you could see they were bored..Apple missed the chance to do something here, but didn't, yes the new apps have some cool (sic) features, but really there was more going on in Apple's universe than this, we know that and so do Apple, so it was a dumb statement to bring everyone there and bore them to death, I am not expecting another "And now..." moment, but just genuine information on ideas and timelines, iMac, iPhone, Software products, Snow Leapord, tablet iPhone, this is Apple one of the most progressive companies on the planet and they are on a genuine upswing on people switching to a new platform (Thanks iPod, iPhone), If this is a point to the future it will be dire, if very Microsoft...Apple could have done better, and should have.. sad.gif

The feeling among many at the keynote was that Schiller was nervous at the start (and well he should be) but hit his stride after about 15-20 minutes in. I tell you what, I'm glad it wasn't me. The cynical view might be that Apple kinda hung him out to dry up there. So little to announce, so much time to fill. My opinion on a keynote is that it should present at least one measure of pivotal innovation. That didn't happen - ergo, it wasn't a keynote.

That said, I loved that Apple brought Tony Bennett out to sing what I think was the best possible choice for a farewell song.

A classy move. An expensive one, too. Bennett doesn't play for free.

I watched a small part of it, and maybe its the cynic in me says, maybe it was a Baptism of fire, to see what the guy is made off, either that or it was steves way of saying the board ok I am crook at the moment, but if you boot me good luck finding a replacement, after Schiller stumbled through it.

I disagree on both counts, TL. For one thing, Schiller is a known quantity -- he's done high-profile presentations before and won't be expected to do another Macworld Expo keynote. For another, the board is not going to "boot" Jobs under any circumstances -- he's simply too valuable to the company and, perhaps more than any other CEO, he's earned the right to leave at a time of his choosing.

My guess is this keynote could have been done by Tim Cook, Bertrand Serlet or Phil Schiller, and Phil drew the short straw.
