Just watched a nice little exposé on the iPhone from the guys over at the Australian. For those who may not have seen an iPhone unlocked.

Ahh that was very interesting. Haven't seen an unbroken iPhone yet, although I know of people who do have them. Thanks Brett.

They are a rare thing and it would not be politicall correct for the Australian's Deputy Editor to be seen flaunting a jailbroken iphone would it now?
Windows Vista RC1 made me buy a iMac, thank you Microsoft.

One Mac-related (Leopard) item I got out of the video was that the Weather Widget now includes a seven-day forecast for Australian cities. I paused the video, fired up Dashboard and found I could now get a seven-day forecast for Townsville. I couldn't do that at all under Tiger, even with third-party Widgets.

I've seen an unlocked iPhone in action. Very nice (but I'm waiting for 3G and 32GB)

Yes mickdevlin,

If you have an ipod touch with the latest update you can do the same, I have weather maps on there now for countries that I didn't even know existed.

Ahh the joys of boredom on a rainy day are a wonderful thing...

Why are people so keen for 3G, all i see it as is a conduit for phone companies to sell stuff you don't need. Its like hiphop ringtones, no-wonder kids will get up to their eyeballs in debt. I for the flying (I said a bad word) of me would not want to watch the cricket on a mobile phone nor do want to check out the gold coast girls. Just imagine twenty years from now when all these mobile phone crazy kids are in their late 30's. I'm gonna buy a share in an optometrists 'cos their eyes will be [badly damaged].
GSM works fine for my phone calls.

Not really,

I Am on the Next G network, I don't use all the gimmicks you are referring to, I simply find it's a better network, better coverage, and on the odd time I need to find a restaurant, coffee shop, or anything else, the next 3 network makes it very simple and very painless process.

So as far as i am concerned, roll on the the 3G iphone, and the sooner the better. Because i want 4 of them.

3G/NextG/HSDPA isn't neccesarily about making phone calls but about faster data connections. To a degree, this is about the ability for phone companies to sell us more stuff. Howevef, let me pose a theory.

The majority of folk that frequent this forum are probably digital immigrants. That is, we didn't grow up in the digital world. The web, email, etc came into our analogue lives. Younger folks are digital natives - they don't know a world that doesn't have email, the web, instant messaging, etc. For them, being connected is normal. The ability to IM a friend, check out Facebook and send a video to YouTube isn't "new" - it's how life has always been.

The wireless, digital infrastructure that's being built now is the foundation for the next generation. Sure, some of us more mature folk get some use and benefit today but the wireless networks being established today are the copper wires of the future.

I'm 40 years old and I'd expect that by the time I shuffle off this mortal coil that there will be very few people, if any, using an "old fashioned" cabled telephone or Internet connection.

The reliability and speed of today's wireless infratructure will be resolved to the point where it's as reliable as today's copper/coaxial/fibre.

I started playing with computers at school when all programs were saved to cassette tape. That was in 1980. As such, I'm nly a semi-immigrant (but not a native). I certainly don't want to watch streamed video on a small device. As for IM, Facebook etc, has anyone read Ben Elton's latest novel? It's a rather black look what the children of the natives may spawn.

I'm 45 and can't wait for the day of the landline telephone to end. Owning an iPhone will be the beginning of the end to the tyranny of the wired world!

And therein lies the rub. You see, many people do want to watch streaming video on small screens. I watch a lot of my TV via the screen on my iPod. I record with EyeTV, export and take it wtih me. It means I can keep up with stuff while I'm on the train (between Macworld AU podcasts of course :-) )

During cricket season, I've been able to watch the Aussies on my phone - live. Sure, the picture's small and sometimes jerky but that's just a technical issue that will be resolved in time.

Also, that wireless foundation will be the medium through which TV stations and movie studios will deliver video on demand. It'll take some time but it will happen.

As for the wireless telephone - many years ago there was debate in this fair land about the PMG/Telecom/Telstra introdcuing time charges on local calls. The outcry was enormous but today we have timed local calls. There are more mobile calls made than landline calls. Who's embraced it? The young folks who can't buy a house so they rent. Rather than pay for a landline they get a pre-paid or capped mobile and it's their only phone. If I lived in a decent coverage area I'd give up the landline and live with my mobile and a VoIP service.

I've got an unlocked iPhone (finally!) and it's a great device. This is the sort of thing Apple should expect when dragging their heels like this. I actually think Apple don't care. It's just a small minority of us Apple geeks who have iPhones in use here in Australia, regular people (or people who want it easy) will just sit and wait for the iPhone. Me on the other hand, will happily go through a few hoops to get one.

If anyone needs a hand getting an iPhone and unlocking it etc. feel free to ask, it's actually quite trivial and very cheap if you know someone in the US (they're only US$399+tax). The only downside is that you've got no support here. My iPhone was DOA and I had to send it back to the USA (not cheap - $100 round trip). Would have been nice to take it into a service center locally. But oh well, the iPhone is worth it!

I think I will wait until such time as a official 3G version for Australia is released, as I think there better phones that do more for less at the moment and better flexibility (removable memory cards, better cameras, FULL Gps etc), yes I know the look and usability is better of iphone, but I am still not convinced at its price tag, but then again many people will buy a Mac Book air just from a form factor point of view. tongue.gif

Well the iPhone from the US is only AU$600 max (inc 3 day insured shipping), I doubt it will be any cheaper for a local release, which will be tied to an upper-tier plan. (probably $499 + $60/month plan on a 24 month contract)

Oh, I'm one of those who bought a MacBook Air just because of the form factor wink.gif

I'm in the same position as decryption, though I think I got mine before him (September 2007, 1.0.2 OTB iPhone 8GB).

I've got an Air on order too - purchased for the weight and form factor as well.

I agree with the iPhone pricing, domestically. It's not going to be cheap. I got mine for $499 USD excluding shipping which wasn't too bad. I think it was a great price and I was willing to pay such a price for an early (Week 30!) iPhone.

I love my iPhone and iMac 24" combo. smile.gif

As i have said previously, i am in the Market for 4 Iphones, but i am afraid i am a bit old fashioned, i will sit on the fence until they come out here.

So i a guaranteed proper coverage, and all the features that the iphone has to offer, including a warranty, and no stress waiting for somebody to jail break it every time a new feature or update is added.

But hey thats just me

I'm desperate for an iphone, but I'm with you on this, I want full support, warranty etc, and if it means it's another couple of months then so be it. Actually I need it to be a couple of months until my blackberry contract runs out, so apple, any time after March 21 is fine with me! LOL!
