There is a particular series from a couple of decades ago that I enjoy; however, the DVDs are only available in Region 1 format. I looked for a long time and never seen those DVDs in Region 4 format and so there is now no reason to believe that those will ever be released in R4 format.
Are Region 1 DVDs playable on my iMac? How?
If not, are Region 1 DVDs able to be ripped into an iPad format or some other playable format?
Thankyou
Peter

Not on your iMac without some kind of hack. Maybe someone else can tell you. You'd need an R1 compatible player but could rip to disk.

Yeah it's a firmware issue, unless you can find a firm ware flash program, you are pretty well stuck, I am not sure if VLC allows you to pay movies from different regions, or if you can get around it, by running something like windows media player via fusion installed on your iMac.

It depends on what Mac you have, but in general the only way is an external DVD drive which you know to be region free.
It's stupid and annoying.

You might not know it to look at me, but I'm pretty radical.

Region 1 DVD's can be played on your Mac - However when you insert the Disc into your optical drive the Mac will throw up a pop up screen asking you to change the region, and you can go back and forth between regions - which is fine except you only get to change it five times, after that the Mac will lock to the last selected region.
