I worked to 1 o'clock last night. So only had a few minutes to read up on all the announcement before heading back to work for 7am.

All looks fantastic. Will AMW be available on the new newstand app?

Any news what happens to existing mobilme customers? Any compensation?

jz

Nice effort, Jamie! No word on compensation yet. I'd be happy with a pro-rata conversion into iTunes credit, though.

Cheers

Yeah, apologies for that. I don't have the full story, but someone broke into the data centre that hosts us, and for some reason that screwed us.

We're in the middle of working on going over to an even more 'fail-safe' (but never say never) hosting service. And no, it's not Apple's new one!

I was blown away with Lion... Even though we knew what was coming it looks amazing!!!

The only thing is that I now have to buy a magic trackpad to utilize all the features. Thanks Apple.

iOS 5... some great additions and enhancements. All these features are awesome... What was missing was widgets... Cmon Apple.

Also a Demo of the new multi tasking gestures would have been nice.

I haven't read or seen the cloud stuff yet... Was too much in a rush this morning.

Will comment later.

Wow how surprising. Ken disappointed with a keynote.

So having watched the keynote, I'm pretty excited - been a while since Apple software did that to me. iCloud is, finally, what it should be. None of this web app stuff, it's pointless when Apple integrates its products so well. FREE! 5Gb space, that's pretty impressive. As Dave Bullard said in his article on the AMW home page, a few devs will be crying in their beer, although I won't be able to throw away DropBox of Google Docs altogether as I use them for collaboration.

Lion actually looks better than I at first thought. Looking forward to seeing it in action. I noticed on the Apple Lion page that windows will be resizable from any side of the window pane. Only 10 years late! Guess I'll be throwing away Forever Save. Versioning looks great. I just realised the value of the App Store when I needed to download a copy of caffiene for the Macbook while watching the keynote - less than a minute is was found, installed and I was back to business.

iOS5 is a very substantial upgrade, a bit of game changer in someways I suspect. Coupled with the iPad's popularity, being Mac/PC free will be a big deal for many people. It's darned convenient for all of us. I know Android already does this but we're still waiting for the iPad killer, and coupled with iCloud this really is very powerful. No widgets unfortunately, but they do notifications right.

I think Apple have differentiated itself regarding cloud syncing - it's not doing a Google or Amazon, it's leveraging its strengths and uniqueness and has something far more powerful. Only Google will come close IF (and it's a big if) it can get a widespread installed base for Chrome OS. The integration really is astounding.

Roll on July for Lion, and I can't wait for iOS5, although I will be waiting before installing it on my iPhone 3GS, not that I'm expecting Apple to let the iOS 4 fiasco on the 3G do a repeat performance.

Hey I am not the grumpy, I just had my hopes up for some new hardware, and secondly, most of the stuff is lion and iOS 5 has been talked about for months, so it's not all that earth shattering to most people, who has been looking at the rumor sites.
Come on 20K

You are a grump Ken....:) I think Apple have reached a point where they are going to let people know what is going to be announced, so as not to disappoint. The rumor sites are getting more and more accurate, so I guess they realize this and admit defeat. It would be nice to get a surprise though.

Anyway, about iCloud.... It's really a revamped MM. Calendars, contacts etc already sync through MobileMe... So that's nothing new.... What's good though is Apps, books etc being added to the mix.

I also just realized that the iCloud services for Apps and iBookstore are already active.

The only thing I'm unsure of is that if everything is updated over the air constantly, isn't that going to use up data allowance? Particularly over 3G?? I'm assuming only some things can be synced via 3G while other things ov WiFi.

1. Also there was no mention of syncing videos taken on an iOS device, only pictures? If that was synced to iCloud can you imagine the amount of data being chewed up particularly over 3G?

2. Also if we can now sync everything without iTunes, does everything we purchase etc on our iOS devices get synced back to iTunes? Is iTunes redundant now for syncing iOS devices? How would one restore their iPhone from backup if things go wrong? If you can backup your phone to the cloud, how do you restore from backup?

Just a few questions I have that I am a bit confused about.

Good point about videos, although it was implied, Jobs didn't say outright. It sounded to me like your iOS device will wirelessly backup to iTunes, so I imagine you can still do a full restore. And I think iCloud is so much more than MM. It incorporates it, kills off a few bits (web apps, which really are redundant in the Apple universe, and goes way beyond it.

BTW, how's the new job?

Good point Jamie.

I still don't see how iCloud can create a Dropbox type of service... Am I missing something??

Maybe that's what Airdrop does... But from what I gather, Airdrop is just a way to transfer files between coworkers Macs.

So I wonder if you can do a full restore wirelessly which hooks into iTunes??? I'm still a bit confused.

The job is good thanks.... I couldn't believe it, the whole office is decked out with Macs.... They have given me a 21 inch iMac to work on.....it's an absolute pleasure...:) i was blown away.

One thing I neglected to tell everyone is that this is a contract role, so I will have to look for work again in August... Arghhh... It's a tough market at the moment in what I'm looking for which is training and coaching. I'm currently working as a training coordinator in this new contract role.

My understanding.

DB = sync anything you put in there. It's a ubiquitous folder. Needs some management.
iCloud = sync anything between relevant apps. The advantage is it's completely transparent, it just happens.

I'm thinking of DB as the new iDisk and iCloud as MM services, but with some overlap. I'll be able to sync docs with iCloud, it looks like I'll need DB for some web sharing. But consider this, with not needing to sync certain data in DB my 2Gb free account is going to stretch even further. I think they'll be complementary and once again the user wins.
