I wouldn't really bother with the 160GB Apple TV - we have the 40GB one, and just stream everything to it. There's just a bit of music stored locally on the device.

Thanks Skyhawk. I thought about a 40GB. I don't have much space on my laptop as it is, but I do have a 640GB external USB drive. If I start storing stuff on that and then purchase directly from the Apple TV, will iTunes automatically store it on the USB drive. Also will reading from the drive via the laptop then wifi slow things down?

Thanks Rach

If you really want the 160GB version here is a link to an Ozzie store which has 5 in stock for order online at what appears to be a good price in comparison to others I saw quoted.

Thanks gazza. Because there aren't many around it makes me think that there could be an update soon but if I don't buy one now I never will!

If you purchase something on the Apple TV, it downloads it directly to itself, and then syncs it back to the iTunes library it's set to sync with. Once it's done that you can put it in another library and remove it from that one if you like (We have the music from our iMac synced to it, so when we buy a movie it syncs into the iMac's iTunes library. I then copy it into my library and remove it from the iMac's library).

I'm looking forward to getting iWork '09 (and the reviews of the apps, too).

Would anyone here use iWork.com?

I'll also be upgrading to iLife '09 for the iPhoto features.

The box sets (iLife '09, iWork '09 and Mac OS X 10.5.6) are also a good idea.

I'd likely use iWork.com for school project collaboration - not much beyond that though. Maybe it could be used in all-Mac schools for marking/assessing assignments.

Are you sure it's not $0.50 a track OR 30% of the current album price, depending on whether you're upgrading individual songs or a whole album?

I'm totally bamboozled by the pricing! I've just logged into iTunes and upgraded my downloads to the iTunes Plus versions and the price I was quoted for the songs and albums they nominated didn't match whichever way you calculate it thomasina and clinton1550 - it was actually a figure in between the two but closer to clinton's "rip-off" version!! However the info on the iTunes site confirms what thomasina has said. Most of my music collection in iTunes is actually copies of my CD's so the cost for the upgrade of the iTunes downloads wasn't too onerous anyway. However I am looking for clarification of the situation, any ideas?

I'm sticking to only ripping CDs in iTunes. The last two were ripped as AIFF, which is much better than any compression. I also wait for the "bargain bin"-type CDs which are also much cheaper than anything offered by the iTunes Store.

Face recognition in iPhoto, better geotagging support, hells yeah! It's just what I've wanted for the past year.

iMovie has a timeline now, I haven't even used iMovie 7 yet, none of my computers are powerful enough to run it but I know this is going to make many people very happy.

GarageBand's new learn to play feature, awesome! I can use it to learn how to play our piano.

iTunes Plus has been extended.

I'm rather shocked and disappointed, no new mini, what gives? There hasn't been a silent update either, I just checked the US Apple Store it's the same Mac mini but now it comes with iLife 09.

Seriously, what happened to the NVIDA powered, Firewire 800ed, extra USB ported, Mini DisplayPorted and Mini DVI ported wonder the rumors promised me.

Final nail in the mini's coffin? Yes, I'm starting to think so.

No new iMac either! they were going to be quad core marvels and there was supposed to be a high end 28" model.

And so it ended with a whimper and not a bang....bit like life really, I am not surprised Jobs didn't get out of bed for this..tepid in the extreme...but no Mac Mini is a serious problem...Apples are getting to expensive and they could have built a good entry model around the Mac mini, with offers of 1 or 2 FPD screens, the problem with the current MacMini, is grunt, serious editors like me didn't take it seriously, now we need it, its just not good enough, a little oooph..and ahhh! and it will zoom through the door, give us what we need and we will buy it....when I win the lotto I will buy a Macpro17....

Listening to phil schiller speak now, via the webcast.
He is so boring.
iphoto is cool but doesn't need a keynote. I don't know anyone whom payed for ilife.
the features are cool, and I'm sure iwork is fabulous too.
Schiller wasted more time showing the geotagging thing, than anyone will bother using it for.

But my god, what a complete waste of time.
anyone stupid enough to spend over $4000 on the new 17 MBP obviously doesn't need their money.

The last 2 keynotes have sucked so bad. But this is the worst of them. People barely bothered clapping.
Bring back Steve.

Listen to what the people want APPLE!

like a new mac mini pro
or a new affordable netbook.
or an iphone that has a battery that lasts more than 2 days.
or an upgrade to AppleTV.
or bloody anything that costs less than $2000

the last 3 Macbook Pro's i bought last year, cost me no more than $2200 each, and they all had 12 month warranties.
I would struggle to pay anything more than that.
Apple has their international pricing a bit screwed up at them moment.
For the first time ever. I am beginning to lose my interest in Apple and the direction their heading.
I have to say I really don't look forward to the keynotes like I used to.

O gazza, what do you have a sign hanging around your neck saying pick on me today or something.

And jamie, if they had of bought something out ground breaking, I would have watched it to, no matter who was doing it, but it was such a let down, I just couldn't be bothered, it was just as east to read the reports here, and a darn site quicker.

Are you sure it's not $0.50 a track OR 30% of the current album price, depending on whether you're upgrading individual songs or a whole album?

I quoted iTunes exactly:

QUOTE
You will be charged $0.50 Inc GST a song and 30% of the current album price…

But now I've noticed something strange, the $5.10 album I mentioned has 11 tracks, bear with me while I go through the math.

Album upgrade costs $5.10 for 11 tracks at $0.50 a track. Cost of album is 16.99.

11x0.5=5.5

16.99x0.3=5.097

5.5+5.097=10.597

10.597-5.1=5.497

5.5-5.1=0.4

So the album cost five dollars ten to upgrade. Each track is supposed to be fifty cents each, eleven tracks times fifty cents equals five dollars fifty, so already Apple's working out appears to be wrong.

Then thirty percent of sixteen dollars ninety nine is five dollars ten, maybe it is fifty cents a track or thirty percent of the album price. But the wording explicitly says AND, so…

Five dollars ten plus five dollars fifty equals ten dollars fifty nine. The difference between the actual price and what it is supposed to be, going by the wording in iTunes is five dollars forty nine.

Sorry I put you through all that.

That AND had better be a typo caused by miscommunication.

I'm still not in a hurry to upgrade.

I am beginning to come over to your side, the mini is dead but, there is still hope! The Mac mini is still available for sale, there might be an update yet!

What a lame keynote. Apple would have been better off not having a keynote at all.

Lam?, Ok I haven't watched it yet but judging from what's come out of it, it was a good keynote with some decent product announcements.

I know I'm probably alone, I haven't watched the keynote but I love new software. Great software is what makes apple so good and all their hardware is fantastic at the moment. We can't always have an iPhone moment. And I agree with TLCAUS the mini is dead.

No you're not alone. I think the new additions to iMovie and iPhoto are truly awesome. Faces and Places, I am going to buy iLife just for that. The stabilisation feature blew me away, I couldn't believe it was that good. iWork, don't use it, don't care but it sounds like a good update.

Phil, yes he's not the most emotive of public speakers.

iPhoto is cool, it does need a keynote and I have bought both iLife 08 and iWork 08.

Geotagging is a relatively new thing, in my experience you do need to take a long time to explain it, I have tried to explain it to many people, none of them have quite grasped the concept yet. When geotagging is commonplace it will need less time to explain. I will use the geotagging features 10 times more than Phil spent taking about it. Better geotagging support is something that I have wanted in iPhoto for over a year now and Apple has delivered to me exactly what I wanted. Now I can browse my photos by place rather than just time, now I can see how a certain location changes over time without going to the trouble of manually sorting my photos, now I can see my photos on a map without needing to use Google Earth, now I don't have to keyword so many photos, now I can go on but I won't.

Yes the 17" MacBook Pro is expensive, but we do not buy them out of stupidity. We buy it because we need the bigger screen size, we buy it because we need the performance, we buy it because we have considered the other options and decided that a 17" MacBook Pro is best for our needs.

The last two keynotes have sucked? What are you basing that on? The 2007 Macworld Expo? Apple can never beat the 2007 keynote it is IMPOSSIBLE.

Steve will be back when his health returns.

Boring? I'll have to find out for myself when I download the keynote as a podcast so I can keep it forever and watch it again and again without having to re-download it. Oh and I quite like wasting my time.

The following comment isn't aimed at anyone in particular, it is aimed at the mac community in general. I copy/pasted it from I post I did in another forum.

QUOTE
No wonder Steve didn't do it? No, that's not my opinion. That makes it sound like there are things that are beneath the great Steve. For someone who is so passionate about what he does, it's in bad taste to say that he didn't do the keynote because the products suck (weren't "earthshattering"). He didn't do the keynote because he's recovering from an illness and that's the best thing for him to do.

Shame on you all.

Did you read my Post#26 above clinton1550? I found something similar to you. The quoted Apple figure for upgrading to iTunes Plus for me DOES NOT match the "calculations" as they have stated, no matter how you look at it, typo or not!!! However, unlike you I decided to upgrade because the cost was not onerous (most of my iTunes library is from ripped CDs) When this kerfuffle is sorted out I will "hit" Apple for the refund if it's due!
