Is there any other way to buy Mountain Lion, other than from the App Store? I have a 2gb data download a month. Normally I don't need any more. Thanks

No there isn't another way to buy it.

But if you're near an Apple Store I'm sure you can take your Mac into the store and use their WiFi to download it.

you can also go to a WIFI area. IF you live in town that is...have a coffee and enjoy your downloads. I know heaps of people that do that.

Or as Brian says, go to a MAc store near you they will do it or use their WIFI. I did that last year in Paris for a couple of things. They are very helpful in that way.

Plus the speed when downloading from an apple store, is really really fast.

Thanks for replying. Forgive my ignorance, but does it mean I take my imac to an Apple store (60 km on train) or take it to eg Macdonalds for WIFI? Not sure how that would work. My local library has free WIFI, but only 20 mb d/l. Also would have to take imac there.

You will be able to buy mountain lion from the app store usually in a week or two, on a USB stick.

Perhaps I shall drop into the old magazin de pomme when next I'm in Paris myself! ;)

Not even a dozen stores in France and they are all 500 k's away from me!

Cheers,

From memory Maccas only gives you 50meg. You'd have to take it into Apple. Lion on a USB cost $70, as opposed to $30 for the download, so you'll need to work out the economics if and when they provide that option for ML.

I read you won't be able to buy it on a USB stick this time round. Only on the Mac App Store.

It's been suggested that you can purchase it in the MAS, begin and then terminate the download and then complete installation from a USB stick if you can get a copy from a friend. Don't know if it's been proven though.

Nearly, you download it,then locate the downloaded file in the applications folder, then follow the instructions, on the macworld Australia home page , and make a bootable DVD

I did Macworld and they advised a bootable USB rather than a DVD due to not all Macs having optical drives anymore.

All the walkthroughs I've read have suggested 8gb.

Yes, I've read 8gig too. I did mine on a 16gig just because that's all I had to hand at the time (overwrote lion)

Thanks for the info from all who replied.
Looks like I will have to stay with Snow Leopard. Same thing happened last year with Lion. I was away OS when released on USB. After I came back decided to wait for next OS upgrade, Mountain Lion.
