I am wondering if you made the switch to Moneyworks. I upgraded my MYOB from First Edge to Account Edge (v9.5) last year. Apart from the onerous company file verification (that I alway have to ring them about as the online method doesn't work), and the boring interface, in now find that I need to have Version 11 to run Mountain lion as 9.5 isn't supported any more. Is this a free upgrade? Hell no! Is it a marginal cost? No! It's the cost of my last upgrade plus $50 a month for "support and future updates" I would love to jump ship. Any thoughts?

We called support twice in that time, both times because of a glitch in the software which was not generated by our error. I don't suppose that's a terrible record, but if we hadn't been paying for "support" we'd have had to cough up to fix it.
The annual fee is outrageous, and I don't like the control they have over software that I have paid dearly for!
Do the sums Ken, with Moneyworks there will be a learning curve no doubt, even if you pay someone to migrate your data (which you should be able to do with a simple transfer) the total cost will be no more than two more years of MYOB "support". I'm in the process of buying a bicycle worth almost that much!
Thankfully we no longer have complicated accounting requirements, (and MYOB did everything we asked of it including running a payroll of more than a hundred casuals) so the change over was a snap (to Moneyworks Cashbook), and it gave me the opportunity to reshuffle accounts and have a general sort of clean up.
Accounting is accounting I'm afraid,
I hate the "big company" impersonal feeling of the MYOB machine - a bit like being bound to Microsoft and the support is simply extortion for most small business users.
On the other hand, if we still had payroll and so on, I'd probably not bother to make the switch despite my protests, because I'd be too busy focussing on other things.
For me the decision was very easy - Moneyworks Cashbook was something like $60 from the App store and because that's all I need now...... well I don't need to look up MYOB to tell me how much I saved!
For you, well I'd strongly recommend that you do it, because of the entertainment we'll get out of listening to all your frustrations on the way through!
Cheers,
P

I'm in a quandary just the now...I have Accountedge vs8 which they say is not supported under Mountain Lion, I'm ready to install ML but don't want to stuff up my accounts.
my options are:
1. Another expensive upgrade of myob, and I hear that the latest version is as slow as a wet week.
2. Install ML and hope myob 8 works
3. switch to Xero, online accounting which my accountant prefers, but cost $50 a month - every month.
4. Pay $900 and switch to Moneyworks Gold (I need quotes, orders, invoicing, inventory)
Option 4 is attractive except for the learning curve and cost.
Has anyone tried older versions of Accountedge and mountain Lion?

Ken, thanks so much for that.
My accounting needs are very basic indeed, and not having to upgrade because of an OS upgrade is a huge bonus. I find it hard to believe there are not more options for consumers in Australia as far as Accounting programs are concerned. My experience with MYOB has been awful. From the repetitive, convaluted and compulsory company file verification, to the ridiculous and expensive "support program" I find it hard to understand why customers suck it up and stick with them. I used to use Quicken back in the OS7,8,9 days, but the Australian support stopped.
Again, thanks for your valuable input.

Thanks Ken, that would be very much appreciated. There's no point in me calling myob and asking them becasue they will just say no - you have to upgrade.

yes, which is why I'd not be trusting the word of MYOB on this...I've a good mind to just let mountain lion do it's thing and see what happens......

Never fear Sir Ken!
MoneyWorks will provide a FREE copy of the software for your accountant, AND you can code your accountants codes into every item as well, so if your accountant has his own way of doing stuff, a simple accounts export will make it even cheaper for him!

So in a long winded way around all of this, i am stumped if i know what to tell you, it seems very Hit and Miss, all i can say is Before you instal mountain lion, COPY your myob DATA file to a CD or a DVD or some other sort of media, before you install mountain lion, If it wont open your myob data file, after you update, get your back up out, and replace the existing file, with the back up you made a hour ago, and try again.

I had this issue when I upgraded my Macbook Pro recently. The permission issue was not in the "file", but the Folder containing the application and file (if I remember correctly). So, perhaps do the "Get Info" on that folder, then unlock (if locked), and check the permissions while your at it.

This may be a bug not related to MYOB. I got this "No disc space left" prompt the other night. This, on the brand new Macbook Pro which prior to this session had plenty of room on it. After a restart I had plenty of disc space again but not as much as I expected. So using Daisy Disc I found and culled a number of large files including a Deleted User account which while deleted was still taking up 74GB.

Sorry to take so long to reply, been out all day.
I am so grateful for all your work, perhaps still a wee bit unsure as to which way to go, but you have certainly saved me from a lot of trouble.
I'm in two minds whether to go for Moneyworks or upgrade MYOB. I'll speak to my accountant tomorrow, see what she says.
