Ok we know apple are bringing out a map service, which is pretty snazzy, but does anybody know if my favorite google feature will be available ?? Google street view, which I use almost daily.

I really need street view, and I will bet you anything, now that apple are doing there own thing, google will take there bat and ball and go home with it, and won't want to share anything with apple ever again.

It won't have street view but neither will Google pack up and go home - they want your data! Give it a few months for them to bring out their own maps app or web app.

Oh, and how the hell did you do business before Google maps? :yahoo:

Walked around blind.

I hear what you say Alex, but there might be snag in the cog wheels, they may make an app, but they some how have to convince, apple to put it on the app store.

Yeah, but hopefully we could see a web app (browser based) if Apple reject it. I don't see why they couldn't do it.

Hey guys, long time no see and all that.

I've just finished working on a fairly comprehensive comparison of Apple Maps and Google Maps, I strongly recommend you take a look.

If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them and I can post screenshots of specific areas if you like.

Nice comparison Clinton, and wow! Apple Maps looks rubbish! Like you say, hopefully we see a big improvement come release time

I am kinda surprised the Tom Tom maps built into ios 6, look so ordinary compared to the Tom Tom app you buy from the app store.

Wow, that's excellent Clint (your blog post, not Apple Maps!) Personally I'm less worried about satellite imagery, but I am surprised it's so poor compared to Google. What's more concerning is the inaccurate and absent locations. I hope they get that sorted quick sticks! What's the go anyway? I thought they were getting data from Tom Tom. Hopefully they'll be doing better by the time it's out of beta.

Like I said in the article, I'll be keeping an eye on Apple Maps to see if things improve. The Maps app itself is good, Apple doesn't need to do much work there, pretty much all the improvements that Apple needs to make are server side. That means that Apple can update the maps at any time without posting a software update. Here's hoping they're on a fast release schedule because there's a lot of work to be done.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

Loved the blog Clinton, made for a great read over dinner by myself tonight.

Another issue would be all the third part apps that open up Google maps when you tap on the link.

I don't want to end up in Snowtown when looking for a bank at night :)

Love your work

Good comparison, but who would use google maps or apple maps on an extended journey? I know it would use up all my data allowance.

Not sure about Apple, but the google maps is no substitute for a GPS.
I use TomTom foR iPhone and find it works well 90% of the time.

Good news everyone! Apple updated Apple Maps this week. I've done another post to show what's new. So if Apple keeps updating the maps regularly we might have something that's actually good by the time iOS 6 launches.
