Generally better to get a prepaid card when you get there. Roaming charges are horrendous.

Prepaid definitely, did that when I went to England at Xmas. Cost me $30 to send a few texts and emails in Dubai using my Telstra sim but bought an English sim at gatwick and $30 lasted the whole trip with a lot of usage.

In fact, I'd take the sim card out before you leave home!

Local SIM cards are available in most places in Europe and North America and some in Asia, but if your internet requirements aren't huge, you could probably get away with using free Wifi services in cafes.

Where are you heading? "Overseas" is a big place, there's no point in getting a sim card if there's no coverage at your destination.

May I allow one of my personal prejudices to bubble to the surface here though? Why not give the kids a movie and games-free holiday as well? Give them a window and some pencils to draw what they see, they are on adventure too after all.

Cheers,

I'd guess that would be dependent on the carrier. Need to do some research before you leave, I think.

MY understanding is that the iPad can't be used for a hot spot, but the iPhone can. None the less, phone data isn't always cheap, so be careful what you buy. Pre paid sims are available in lots of places quite readily.
