Since installing 10.7.4, my iMac won't go to sleep through energy saver in system preferences.
I've reinstalled Lion but the problem remains.
I've carefully gone through all things on and impacting on my computer that might affect this function both collectively and individually but this process made no difference to the problem.
I've had lengthy discussions with the Apple support community without success (please see
https://discussions....tart=0&tstart=0 )
I've sought help through Apple Bug Reporter but nil response.
Does anyone out there have a fix?

This problem existed back under Leopard also.

It was something to do with altering the options, from memory.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but if you have no luck, you could try googling the Leopard problem.

I know i am going to get canned for this but rest the SMC, or in other words Zap the Pram, shut your mac down, reboot it while holding down P & R & Control & Option, all at the same time, until you here your mac chime 3 times, then let the buttons go, and let your mac start up as per normal.

Thanks. I've tried this but the problem remains.

Have you tried diss connecting any peripherals, connected to your Mac, to see if that fixes the problem

Yes, been through this individually and collectively. Makes no difference.

If you start up in safe mode, and let it sit for 10 minutes ( or what ever your sleep setting is) does it sleep then.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.
Safe mode makes no difference. Problem remains.

I had in under Leopard and the only way I fixed it was to upgrade to SL. I might have had trouble early on under SL too, now I think about it. Not sure if it was a fix I instigated or occurred after an update.

Agreed that this was noticed since Leopard.

It can come down to many things: 'stuck' or 'stubborn' preferences which are not changing properly through display and sleep/wake options which can affect the firmware and hardware, firewalls/antivirus software believe it or not can prohibit sleep mode and also 3rd-party kernel extensions.

We could already eliminate 3rd-party kernels and firewalls/antivirus software because you've tried Safe Boot.

This could be an issue with stubborn preferences; best way to check this is to make a Time Machine backup first.

1. Open Finder and goto the following directory: /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
2. Inside this folder remove the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist"
3. Restart your computer and Reset the PRAM (CMD + OPT + P & R)
4. After restarting, your Mac will generate a new com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

Check to see if the same thing happens afterwards.

If the same thing happens, it might be handy to check the integrity of the OS by installing the OS on an External HD then booting up to the External HD. It's going to be using the same hardware as the Mac, so if the same issue occurs then you could be dealing with a hardware issue.
