I am getting tired and bored with the lack of updates for MYOB, so I am thinking about updating to Money Works Gold, but before I plonk down $1375.00, bucks versus $449.00 to upgrade to the next boring addition of MYOB, has anybody around here used Money Works Gold, and can they tell me if its worth an extra $900 , plus the headache of entering all my data again, before July 1 this year.

Hi Ken
I am wondering if you made the switch to Moneyworks. I upgraded my MYOB from First Edge to Account Edge (v9.5) last year. Apart from the onerous company file verification (that I alway have to ring them about as the online method doesn't work), and the boring interface, in now find that I need to have Version 11 to run Mountain lion as 9.5 isn't supported any more. Is this a free upgrade? Hell no! Is it a marginal cost? No! It's the cost of my last upgrade plus $50 a month for "support and future updates" I would love to jump ship. Any thoughts?

Tom. I am in the stupid upgrade program, it's a blatant rip off, but apart from that I do have good news for you myob 9.5 works like a charm under mountain lion .

I paid the stupid amount for fifteen years before finally coming to my senses!

We called support twice in that time, both times because of a glitch in the software which was not generated by our error. I don't suppose that's a terrible record, but if we hadn't been paying for "support" we'd have had to cough up to fix it.

The annual fee is outrageous, and I don't like the control they have over software that I have paid dearly for!

Do the sums Ken, with Moneyworks there will be a learning curve no doubt, even if you pay someone to migrate your data (which you should be able to do with a simple transfer) the total cost will be no more than two more years of MYOB "support". I'm in the process of buying a bicycle worth almost that much!

Thankfully we no longer have complicated accounting requirements, (and MYOB did everything we asked of it including running a payroll of more than a hundred casuals) so the change over was a snap (to Moneyworks Cashbook), and it gave me the opportunity to reshuffle accounts and have a general sort of clean up.

Accounting is accounting I'm afraid,

I hate the "big company" impersonal feeling of the MYOB machine - a bit like being bound to Microsoft and the support is simply extortion for most small business users.

On the other hand, if we still had payroll and so on, I'd probably not bother to make the switch despite my protests, because I'd be too busy focussing on other things.

For me the decision was very easy - Moneyworks Cashbook was something like $60 from the App store and because that's all I need now...... well I don't need to look up MYOB to tell me how much I saved! :yahoo:

For you, well I'd strongly recommend that you do it, because of the entertainment we'll get out of listening to all your frustrations on the way through! :yahoo: It's time we had a new whipping boy software company! ;)

Cheers,

P

Glad to see this thread .

I'm in a quandary just the now...I have Accountedge vs8 which they say is not supported under Mountain Lion, I'm ready to install ML but don't want to stuff up my accounts.

my options are:
1. Another expensive upgrade of myob, and I hear that the latest version is as slow as a wet week.
2. Install ML and hope myob 8 works
3. switch to Xero, online accounting which my accountant prefers, but cost $50 a month - every month.
4. Pay $900 and switch to Moneyworks Gold (I need quotes, orders, invoicing, inventory)

Option 4 is attractive except for the learning curve and cost.

Has anyone tried older versions of Accountedge and mountain Lion?

And Pete, like you I have used myob since 1994, back when it was version 1, I don't have a problem having somebody setting up money works gold for me, it's just the 5k I have to pay the accountant, every year to go back to a manual accounting system, that bothers me. My accountant currently has myob, and just hits a few buttons, and i out of there only $800 lighter in the back picket.

Ken, thanks so much for that.
My accounting needs are very basic indeed, and not having to upgrade because of an OS upgrade is a huge bonus. I find it hard to believe there are not more options for consumers in Australia as far as Accounting programs are concerned. My experience with MYOB has been awful. From the repetitive, convaluted and compulsory company file verification, to the ridiculous and expensive "support program" I find it hard to understand why customers suck it up and stick with them. I used to use Quicken back in the OS7,8,9 days, but the Australian support stopped.

Again, thanks for your valuable input.

Because I require complex inventory control, including a bill of materials, I am really stuck with myob, with no real way out.

Thanks Ken, that would be very much appreciated. There's no point in me calling myob and asking them becasue they will just say no - you have to upgrade.

yes, which is why I'd not be trusting the word of MYOB on this...I've a good mind to just let mountain lion do it's thing and see what happens......

Never fear Sir Ken!

MoneyWorks will provide a FREE copy of the software for your accountant, AND you can code your accountants codes into every item as well, so if your accountant has his own way of doing stuff, a simple accounts export will make it even cheaper for him!

Cheers,

Graham, I just tried an early version of version 8 (8.01) and it didn't bare to well, the first problem I got was, it said i didn't have permission to use this file, so i went to get info and Un ticked the padlock, then i got a message telling me there was not enough disk space to up the file, so i went into file vault ( part of mountain lion) tuned it off, and it opened as per normal (ONCE) and then the second time, it gave the old message again, about not having sufficient disk space, So now i have gone back to and earlier version of an Myob File, from another disk that has never seen lion or mountain lion and its opened perfectly.

So in a long winded way around all of this, i am stumped if i know what to tell you, it seems very Hit and Miss, all i can say is Before you instal mountain lion, COPY your myob DATA file to a CD or a DVD or some other sort of media, before you install mountain lion, If it wont open your myob data file, after you update, get your back up out, and replace the existing file, with the back up you made a hour ago, and try again.

No joy pete, its to limited in the inventory section, I just tried the free demo copy, and the first this i tried was a bill of materials, as i am in the automotive chemical game, i need to be able to say i need .022 of this hydrocarbon plus .057 of this oil, blah blah, money works doesn't recognise increments smaller than .5, which will out this accuracy money works will throw all of my costing and chemical order requirements out the window.

I had this issue when I upgraded my Macbook Pro recently. The permission issue was not in the "file", but the Folder containing the application and file (if I remember correctly). So, perhaps do the "Get Info" on that folder, then unlock (if locked), and check the permissions while your at it.

This may be a bug not related to MYOB. I got this "No disc space left" prompt the other night. This, on the brand new Macbook Pro which prior to this session had plenty of room on it. After a restart I had plenty of disc space again but not as much as I expected. So using Daisy Disc I found and culled a number of large files including a Deleted User account which while deleted was still taking up 74GB.

Tom I think you fix that bug by running repair permissions from disk utility, my list of issues was as long as my arm, and it's been fine ever since

Sorry to take so long to reply, been out all day.

I am so grateful for all your work, perhaps still a wee bit unsure as to which way to go, but you have certainly saved me from a lot of trouble.
I'm in two minds whether to go for Moneyworks or upgrade MYOB. I'll speak to my accountant tomorrow, see what she says.

If you are doing any sort of inventory, with a bill of materials, you will be stuck with myob, like myself graham, but anything else you should be ok..

Did you try downloading the free trial of money works ?
