It's all over the web that Apple seem to be phasing out the 30 pin dock connector. It just struck me - what if Apple do away with physical docking altogether? The only time I dock my iPhone is in a cradle to charge it. With AirPlay, docking is redundant. Instead of docking, Apple will push for more AirPlay enabled devices. My prediction.

Wasn't that the idea ? so you could sync anywhere without the need to be connected to your mac.

Reliance on an Airplay type system would be rediculous in countries (such as NZ) with expensive and/or poor cellular network coverage.
Wireless syncing I can live with, once they make it reliable (it's pretty flaky for me at the moment) but over the air streaming would not suit me.
My understanding is that they are going to do away with the current format dock connector and replace it with a smaller one, I would assume this is to enable 1) smaller devices and 2) less bulky cables - I've not heard any talk to the dock connector being completely removed and logic would suggest that this wouldn't happen as there still needs to be a way to charge the phone and if you need a connector to do this then with only a few more wires you can sync realiably as well.

Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it most never use it.

I think they are reducing the connector size, to allow for a 4G chip, and a larger battery.

Losing the ability to sync manually would be a disaster for me as i don't use cloud with my photographs or music on the iPad.

Yeah I don't put anything in the Cloud either so it would be a deal breaker for me.

Wireless syncing has nothing to do with the cloud or a cellular network.
It still syncs directly to your Mac via iTunes over wifi (which is why you can only do it if iTunes is running on your Mac)

Yep, iPhone to Mac wireless syncing and Airplay both use WiFi. You don't actually *need* a syncing cable even if you don't use iCloud. But yeah, you still need a cable to charge (unless they bring inductive charging).
