Wireless Network Speeds (Or Lack Of)

Hi All,

I just have a question about wireless networks.

I have two macs on the same wireless network, sitting side by side on the same desk - ok, one is below the desk, but both showing full bars connectivity - but getting vastly different network speeds on speedtest.net

17" 2.66GHs i7 MacBook Pro: Ping 19ms, Download 17.04Mbps, Upload 0.85 Mbps

MacPro 3.33GHz 6-core: Ping 24ms, Download 0.77Mbps, Upload 0.16Mbps

????

Why would I be getting such consistently bad results on the Mac Pro when it is showing full bars?
Even my 3Gs gets 39ms/3.38Mbps/0.62Mbps, and the iPad2 26ms/11.07Mbps/0.82Mbps from the same desk

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

You will need to establish,what modem it has built in, whether it's a G or an N, my guess is your laptop has the faster N card installed from the factory.

Never occurred to me to even check that, the MacPro is only 12 months old - much younger than the laptop. So checking, its running 802.11n, same as the laptop.

Does anyone know what the transmission rate indicates in system profiler, and can you change it? For the laptop its 20, and for the Mac Pro its 2!

BTW - they are both only showing 2 bars this morning - aaaarrgghh!
