iPad: It’s a tool, not a toy

As an iPad owner, the question I’m most asked is, “What does it do?” For most people, the iPad is a shiny piece of tech that is little more than an overgrown iPod. And, to some degree, they’re right. It shares the same OS as the iPod and iPhone (iOS 4) and shares many of the same characteristics. The iPad has become an important part of my computing kit. It’s all but replaced my use of a MacBook Pro, netbook and Kindle. What’s interesting to me is that all three of those devices are better than the iPad at something but that the iPad manages to make the right compromises. But what makes the iPad a real productivity boost rather than toy are the applications. Here are a few that I think every business user needs on their iPad to maximise the return on their investment. Bento for iPad There are a thousand…

Facebook Connect mysteriously disappears from Ping

Apple has mentioned Facebook Connect support for new social network Ping in Thursday’s keynote, the iTunes 10 how-to video, on the Ping website (though this has since disappeared), and even in a conversation with All Things D. So why is the feature no longer available? As first seen by this reporter and others, iTunes 10 launched on Thursday with Facebook Connect intact. The feature, initially available when editing your profile, allowed users to connect their Facebook accounts to their Apple IDs to find Facebook friends on Ping. But the option has subsequently vanished. According to an interview that All Things D’s Kara Swisher conducted with CEO Steve Jobs shortly after Thursday’s event, Facebook Connect may not have even been intended to show up in iTunes 10 in the first place. Jobs told Swisher that the two companies had spoken about Facebook…

Lacie MosKeyto

There are plenty of USB drives out there, but this new one from Lacie is pretty incredible. It packs 8GB into a device barely any bigger than the USB port, but is sturdy enough to cope with knocks and bumps. Plus, it comes with 4GB of secure online storage through Wuala.com, so even if you lose it, you'll still have a place to keep your…

iPad Camera Kit

If two camera connectors is one too many for you to carry, this handy adaptor is for you. It combines a USB port and SD card slot into just one adaptor to get your iPad and cameras playing nice. There's a switch to select which slot is in use – it can't use both at once – but other than that it's as simple as plugging it in and transferring images or movies from your cameras and SD…

Quad core and eight-core Mac Pros (Mid 2010)

These days, the consumer-oriented iMacs stand on their own against (and in some cases, surpass) the Mac Pro in day-to-day performance. Does that mean that the Mac Pro has lost its relevance in today’s work environment? Hardly. The Mac Pro continues to be all about expandability and customisation. There are literally billions of configuration combinations available, from four to 12 processing cores, from one to four hard drives or SSDs, up to 32GB of RAM, an Apple RAID card, multiple graphics cards, and more. Anyone who’s struggled to install anything more than RAM in the rest of Apple’s Mac lineup can appreciate how easily these components can be accessed, swapped and installed on the Mac Pro. Another advantage the Mac Pro has is its use of multiple processors with multiple cores. Though programs that take full advantage of up to 24 virtual…

Twitter for iPad is finally here

It’s official: after months in the dark, dank caves of rumour and speculation, the official Twitter app for the iPad has now emerged into bright, friendly light of the App Store. Announced late Wednesday evening on the company’s blog, Twitter for iPad comes as part of a universal update to the formerly iPhone-only Twitter app. Besides the program’s newly redesigned icon, Twitter’s iPad flavour features an entirely new interface designed around the concept of sharing content. Bringing to mind a never-ending Japanese Shoji screen, Twitter allows users to tap links, photos, conversations – and just about anything else – all of which open up in a series of sliding panels. Flicking to the left or right will bring each panel centre-stage, while the others stack neatly off-screen. HTML5-friendly video players like YouTube and Vimeo will play inside the app, and even better – they’ll…

Discover Preview’s hidden image editing powers

Sometimes you just want to tweak an image and move on... fast. At that moment, you don’t want commitment (iPhoto, Aperture, and Lightroom), or a bazillion editing options (Photoshop), you just want to brighten the picture, adjust the colour, crop it, and be done. We have great news for you. This application exists, it’s free, and it’s already on your Mac. It’s called Preview. Many Mac users prefer using Preview for working with PDFs because of its clean interface and no-nonsense set of tools. What may surprise you, however, is that this application also has a robust set of imaging tools. I’m not just talking about double-clicking on a photo and looking at it on your computer. Beyond that, you can adjust an image’s tonality, colour, and even select objects within the shot to copy and add to other photographs. To prove my…

Hands on with Apple’s new iPods, Apple TV

After the excitement that was Apple's media event, we got to spend a little while in a hands-on area adjacent to the Yerba Buena theatre with a few dozen members of the media, analysts, VIPs, and – most importantly – new iPods and Apple TVs. Without any further ado, here’s what we spotted. Fourth-generation iPod shuffle If you ask us, the second-generation shuffle – the tiny rectangle with circular buttons on its face and a built-in clip – was the pinnacle of iPod shuffle design. The third-generation model, which dropped buttons and forced you control it from a set of headphones, was a step back. Apparently lots of Apple’s customers felt that way, too, because Apple has done a rare pivot and gone back in time for the design of the fourth-generation shuffle. It’s got the snazzy voiceover features and…

All this iPod news still not enough? Well, Apple has added the latest iPod ads to its YouTube page, and to save you going all the way to youtube.com, we've embedded them below. The first, 'New way to nano', is for the new iPod nano and features Cake's Short Skirt/Long Jacket. The ad depicts the new nano's touchscreen and clip showing how you can wear the new device. The second ad is called 'All kinds of fun' and features the song Come Home by Chappo.
Summary: iPod, Apple TV overhauls

As expected, Apple refreshed its iPod lineup at its keynote event, unveiling redesigned versions of its iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle music players. But the company didn’t stop there, also announcing an update to its iTunes software and an overhaul of its Apple TV set-top box. The September music event is an Apple tradition dating back at least six years, in which the company typically rolls out new iPods in advance of the holiday shopping season. This year’s edition took place on Wednesday in San Francisco (Thursday morning Australian time), with Apple CEO Steve Jobs leading a 90-minute run-through of his company’s music plans for the coming months. Those plans include a revamped iPod touch that adopts many of the features of its iPhone 4 counterpart – including front-and-back-facing cameras and support for Apple’s FaceTime video chat technology. The…

Apple unveils newer, smaller AppleTV

Topping off its music-focused event today, Apple included a revision of the device that it’s famously referred to as its “hobby”: the Apple TV. Steve Jobs opened with a discussion of the feedback Apple received from users with the release of the original hardware, which he summarised as users wanting a device that was more consumer electronics and less a separate computer. So Apple made design decisions to match: Apple TV video is now entirely streamed from the online store or the local network, doing away with pesky storage-management and syncing issues. And the device is small, quiet, and runs cool, making it ideal for a spot on the TV stand. The Apple TV’s video features rely heavily on an iTunes Store rental model: movie rentals on the Australian iTunes store are unchanged and cost from $3.99 for standard definition, and $4.99 for…

iOS 4.1′s Game Center to hit iPhone next week

At today's keynote, Apple announced that multiplayer games on your iPhone and iPod touch will never be the same, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the company’s highly-anticipated Game Center. As part of the iOS 4.1 update, Game Center will be available as a free download next week. Game Center is both a set of APIs for developers and an app on your iPhone. In practical terms, Game Center will allow developers to better implement multiplayer into their games and players will now be able to easily challenge their friends to matches. Cumbersome leader boards are a thing of the past; other iPhone social networking systems, like OpenFeint, could be obsolete after Game Center is released. Game Center demonstrates Apple’s surprising mastery of the social space. Not only can you challenge your friends or your friends challenge you, but Game Center will “auto-match” you…
