Apple maintains its standards

Apple has a chequered history with industry standards. It was almost solely responsible for popularising USB, for example, leading many people to think it was Apple’s invention (it was Intel’s). Its support of its own FireWire standard has been spotty, and of course it came late to the USB 2.0 party in an attempt to prop up FireWire. And let’s not forget how long it clung to ADB — long after everyone else had abandoned it.

Battle of the Games Legends: Will vs Sid

There's not much that gamers like more than a good battle – whether it's pitting Zerg against Protoss, Righteous Orc against Prancing Elf, Fireball against Spinning Bird Kick or even Hedgehog versus Plumber. There also aren't that many “rock star” games programmers. Arguably, at least since the mid 1990s, there haven't been any, thanks to the growing complexity of game engines. But can you pit the few “names” left against each other? I'm going to try.

Spotlight on notebooks: live blog

This morning's event, in which Apple promised to "put the spotlight on notebooks," has been nearly as anticipated, discussed and dissected beforehand by pundits and Mac users as if it were an Expo keynote. How many of the rumours were true? Have your wishes been answered? We'll update live as the event unfolds. Jason Snell from US Macworld is there at the event, and we'll be getting his commentary as it happens. There will also be input from the Australian angle by MJCP as and when necessary. We'll have Australian pricing information immediately after the end of the event.

All atwitter about Apple’s laptop event

By this point, pretty much everybody knows that Apple will be announcing updates to the MacBook line at Tuesday’s Town Hall event. I think even my dad knows about it, and when you’ve reached that level of saturation, there’s honestly not much more room for expansion.

Apple's spring notebook classic

As the financial crisis drags on and the US presidential election marches steadily closer, everybody and their sidekick has a prediction about what’s going to happen in the next couple of months. Nor is the rarefied air of the Apple community immune to this disease of predictionalisis. With the announcement that Apple is planning on rolling out new laptops on October 14th, what kind of changes can we expect to the portable lineup that bears the name MacBook?

I'm shrinking! Can Apple out-Eee the Eee?

Apple's big event tomorrow will turn the spotlight on its notebooks at last -- but Apple needs to tread carefully so it doesn't step on its own tail. Will the launch be all about bigger-better-faster-more-of-the-same, or is it time for something completely different?

Will the next MacBooks be better gaming systems?

Now that Apple has announced plans to hold a special notebook event on Oct. 14, I’m desperately hoping for a new crop of MacBooks that have better video capabilities than the current run does.

An array of audio offerings at AES

I recently dropped into San Francisco’s Moscone Center—home of Macworld Expo every January—to check out the annual AES Convention, put on by the Audio Engineering Society. Think of it as Macworld Expo for the music and audio industry.

Can Apple have its mushrooms and eat them too?

How long can Apple embrace developers with one arm and push them away with the other? Not very long, it seems, as the long-overdue decision to relax nondisclosure agreement terms for developers suggests. But is it enough to keep developers in the fold?

A visit with Guy Kawasaki

So for a whole bunch of reasons far too random to detail here, I ended up sitting in a restaurant attached to a local ice rink last week, watching skaters slip and fall while chatting with longtime Apple evangelist and Mac columnist, and current venture capitalist, Guy Kawasaki.

iPhone 2.1: More credit to Apple

Recently, my colleague Chris Breen offered up some kind words for Apple regarding some of the company’s contributions to his multimedia life. In his piece, Chris noted that he’s never at a loss for words when Apple does something stupid, but also believes that the company should be recognised for the things it does right.
