The case of the cracked iPhone

My iPhone 3G normally resides in a case of some sort—the iFrogz 3G Luxe for normal use, and the Incase Power Slider when using the iPhone for GPS during a round of golf. (Sadly, the Power Slider is out of production now; you may be able to find leftovers at your local Apple shop. It does a great job at making battery life a non-issue, even during five hours of intense GPS use.)

Report: Apple to save the album

With the iTunes Store, Apple has done perhaps more than about any other company to help propel the proliferation of (legal) music downloads. And in doing so, Apple has also helped hammer the nail in the coffin of traditional CD sales, thanks to Apple’s simple distribution method and way for users to quickly find and download just the songs they are interested in. Which makes a story in the The Financial Times, reporting that Apple is joining forces with the major record labels to restore the album format, all the more interesting.

webOS update re-enables iTunes sync on Palm Pre

Palm has released webOS 1.1 as a free update to all existing Palm Pre owners. The update features slight enhancements and UI improvements across the board, a handy new feature that reminds you of specific tasks related to someone when a call from them comes in (so you never miss any opportunity to remind that one friend how much he owes you), and a new application from Sprint that allows US users to watch or listen to live NFL games on the Pre itself.

App Store approvals: rated MA (Mostly Arbitrary)

Here's a quick test for you. Which application is worse for your kids: a first-person 3D shoot-em-up game in which the object is to shoot scores of zombie-fied humans; a 3D shoot-em-up game in which the object is to shoot and dismember scores of nasty-looking aliens; a 2D shoot-em-up game in which the object is to shoot and dismember scores of mummified humans; an electronic book reader that lets your children access scores of classic books; or an electronic book reader that lets your children access scores of classic books?

The Intel-only future draws closer

With Thursday’s release of Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio, Apple has moved its flagship video and audio editing suites exclusively to the Intel chipset—while previous releases were Universal apps for either PowerPC or Intel CPUs, these versions are Intel-only.

Profile: Logic Studio versus GarageBand

With GarageBand, Apple has done a lot for musicians seeking an affordable and easy-to-use package. Using the music creation software from the iLife suite, you can record demos, play one of many included software instruments with a MIDI or USB controller, lay down a loop-based groove to inspire a new song, and thrash away on a guitar routed through the program’s simulated amps and pedalboard effects.

iPod touch ascendant as traditional iPod sales fall

Apple’s record-setting quarterly financial results, released overnight, point out that the economic and marketing powerhouse that was the iPod has been eclipsed. The traditional iPod isn’t dead, not by a long shot, but its days of explosive growth are over — replaced by the growth of the iPod touch and the iPhone.
