I have to give credit where it’s due, Whirly Word (for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) is the best ‘filler game’ of my iOS life thus far. You know, the puzzles you turn to, to void the extra few minutes you have to wait for the bus home or when your friend is late to meet you for coffee? I’m sure I must look as if I’m busy viewing an important email or sending highly confidential documents on my iPhone at moments like these. In truth, I’m likely to be playing good old Whirly.

Here’s why: The word puzzle game offers you a spinning wheel made up of six randomly selected letters. From this selection you have to form as many words as you can.

Above the wheel is a listing of dots that indicate how many words made up of a certain number of letters that you have to find in order to progress to the next level and a new wheel. Tap the letters on the wheel to spell a word and hit ‘enter’ in the centre of the wheel. If the word is valid, it will be added to the list above. If not, you have to keep trying.

If you get stuck along the way, you can spin the wheel to rearrange the letters, and look at the puzzle from another angle. But fear not, if you reach your limit and cannot find all the words, you can still move onto the next level provided you have successfully found the majority from the list above.

At the end of the level, the listing reveals all the words you could not find, before you tackle the next challenge.

Wheel of fortune: Tap the letters on the wheel to spell out words, then hit enter to add them to the list above.

I have no real qualms with my friend Whirly, except for the occasional ‘word’ that the game insists is worthy of a place in the dictionary, when in fact it’s not. For example – hashuaa. Go figure. Even still, the entertainment value never fades with this game. This was one of the first apps I downloaded on my iPhone several years back and I still play it often.
