App Guide

With the local AFL and NRL seasons approaching the business end and international heavyweights such as the NBA and NFL starting their new seasons over the coming weeks, it is a great time to have a look at some of the dedicated apps on offer.

AFL – Footy Live

Sportsmate Mobile; Free

An institution for six seasons, the AFL – Footy Live app gives you up-to-the-minute score updates for every AFL game, including live text-based commentary and customisable push notifications.

The comprehensive stats section uses Champion Data and has more options than you will ever need. News feed articles are sourced from a number of reputable websites, including official AFL sources. The ladder, match highlights and press conferences are all easily accessible, as is a round-by-round TV schedule.

You can even select your team and access a customised news feed, even a twitter feed that shows all of your favourite players most recent tweets. The ‘live’ aspect is no joke. This is by far my favourite sports app.

Rugby League Live & Union Live

Sportsmate Mobile; Free

From the same developer as the AFL – Footy Live app, both the NRL and Union offerings are near-identical in both layout and content. Each offers the same exceptional up-to-the-minute coverage of every match, live text-based commentary, comprehensive stats and news features, ladders and customisable social aspects and push notifications. A must for every Australian sports fan, whatever code you follow.

Kuchbi; Free

The self-proclaimed most popular cricket app, iCricket supports push notifications for match updates involving your selected favourite teams, sent automatically every 10 overs or when a wicket falls. Features ball by ball match commentary, as well as a multi-source news section that supports video, fixtures, rankings and a detailed stats section – all of which cover both national and international competitions.

ESPN SportsCenter

ESPN; Free

ESPN SportsCenter aims to provide blanket coverage across 100’s of leagues and teams from various sporting codes around the world. The app provides instant scores, stats and updates on games, customisable via the selection of your favourite teams to filter the information to suit your interests. This is useful when following teams from multiple sports and countries. ESPN SportsCenter also features extensive Twitter integration and dozens of push notification options.

NBA Properties; Free

Despite the outdated title, this official NBA app contains up-to-date news on all things NBA. It contains all the stats, highlights and commentary. But what sets it apart from the ESPN offering is the integration with NBA League Pass – a subscription service that allows customers to watch every game on their computer during an NBA Regular Season and Playoffs. This app allows League Pass members to view full games on their iPad or iPhone, a feature exclusively held by this official NBA app.
